{"id":5115,"date":"2022-11-04T16:07:41","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T23:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=5115"},"modified":"2022-11-04T16:10:14","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T23:10:14","slug":"palomar-alumni-awarded-tool-sets-in-project-cornerstone-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/palomar-alumni-awarded-tool-sets-in-project-cornerstone-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Palomar Alumni Awarded Tool Sets in Project Cornerstone Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"open-para\">A key industry partnership yields new tools for new hires as recent Palomar graduates get started in their welding careers with a local company.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 Two graduates of Palomar\u2019s Welding Technology program were recently hired by an award-winning San Diego metal fabricator and provided with new sets of tools as part of a scholarship provided by Project Cornerstone and Palomar College.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Elian Cortez and Juan Antonio Ortega Martinez went to work for Bapko San Diego\u2014formerly Clark Steel Fabricators\u2014and on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, they received tool kits to help them excel in their new careers.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship was provided through a partnership between Palomar and Project Cornerstone, a nonprofit based in San Diego that is dedicated to creating awareness and opportunities for students to choose a career in the construction industry and related fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuan and Elian\u2019s success at Palomar and employment in the region\u2019s workforce exemplifies the impact our students have in today\u2019s economy,\u201d said Dr. Star Rivera-Lacey, Superintendent\/President of Palomar College. \u201cWe look forward to many more success stories like this one as a result of Palomar\u2019s ongoing work with local and regional industry partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the welding field, as in other trades, it\u2019s customary for workers to own some of the tools that they use on the job. But for those who are just starting out, the cost can be a serious barrier to entry in the job market.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, companies that need qualified welders are struggling to find people to fill positions.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry Sanders, the Production Manager at Bapko San Diego, said Cortez and Martinez were the second and third welders he has hired from Palomar College, and that he is looking forward to hiring more from the program in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I saw two other applicants from Palomar, I grabbed them. The training regimen at Palomar is really top-notch,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are great workers, with a great work ethic, and received quality training in their certifications. I really value our partnership with Palomar\u2019s welding program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cortez graduated from Palomar in May with an Associate of Science in Welding Technology and landed his job at Bapko in July: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of things you learn in the field, and the program at Palomar really prepared me for what to expect,\u201d he said. \u201cPalomar taught us to take pride in our work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he feels that he has found his career path, and of his new tools, he added,&nbsp; \u201cThe day I got them, I started using them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez also graduated in May with his Associate of Science in Welding Technology, and says that he received additional career preparation from Project Cornerstone during his final semesters at Palomar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got a lot of support in developing my resume, trying to find jobs, trying to identify which path of welding I wanted to pursue\u2014structural, production or architectural. We also did some tours to local companies,\u201d Martinez recalled. \u201cEverything I learned at Palomar I\u2019m putting to use in my job\u2014all those skills that our instructors taught us, I can use them right away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/project-cornerstone.org\/\">Project Cornerstone<\/a> Executive Director Crystal Howard said her organization\u2019s mission is to promote workforce development in the greater San Diego area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to partner with Palomar College by offering our Tool and Equipment Scholarship that awards students with the tools they need to get started in their career,\u201d Howard said. \u201cThis scholarship program benefits both the student and the employer, and we are continually seeking those win-win opportunities while doing our part to help solve the construction labor shortage.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A key industry partnership yields new tools for new hires as recent Palomar graduates get started in their welding careers with a local company.
