{"id":5053,"date":"2022-09-01T16:51:05","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T23:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=5053"},"modified":"2022-09-01T16:51:05","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T23:51:05","slug":"palomar-made-it-possible-for-me-to-reach-my-dreams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/palomar-made-it-possible-for-me-to-reach-my-dreams\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cPalomar Made It Possible for Me to Reach My Dreams\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"open-para\">Just getting warmed up: Meet student composer Georgia Phipps, who earned a place on the San Diego New Music \u201cEmerging Composers\u201d concert this summer.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 Georgia Phipps took her seat with dozens of other music aficionados in the Athenaeum Art Center in San Diego to listen to a piece entitled, \u201cMelodium ad Dolorem.\u201d It was a weeknight, July 27, 2022, and the ensemble\u2014brass and woodwind\u2014began to play a song no one in the audience except Phipps had ever heard.<\/p>\n<p>It was her song, an original composition written for San Diego New Music\u2019s (SDNM) \u201cEmerging Composers\u201d concert\u2014one of six student compositions chosen to be written, recorded and performed this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor any composer, hearing their music played live and coming across the way you meant it to\u2014it\u2019s an amazing experience,\u201d recalled Phipps, 23, who will earn her associate degree in music at the end of this semester at Palomar College.<\/p>\n<p>The win came for Phipps after several years of intense involvement in the music industry and what she describes as a rigorous musical education at Palomar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the first competition I ever entered\u2014the first time I put my music out there,\u201d she said of the SDNM performance. \u201cPalomar has given me the opportunity to learn and explore and make mistakes in an environment where the professors are understanding and have optimistically high expectations of their students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Madelyn Byrne, Co-Chair of the Performing Arts Department at Palomar, described Phipps as a serious and dedicated student whose \u201chard work is coming to fruition now as she is entering competitions, working as a music teacher, and as a professional composer and musician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorgia has shown tremendous growth as a composer while at Palomar College,\u201d said Byrne. \u201cHer music is imaginative, intelligent, and deeply and thoughtfully expressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Phipps came to Palomar in 2019, she had already been working in the music industry for several years. After earning an occupational degree in Audio Engineering from <a href=\"https:\/\/studiowest.com\/\">Studio West and The Recording Arts Center<\/a> in Rancho Bernardo, she stayed at the renowned studio as a teacher\u2019s assistant and recording engineer.<\/p>\n<p>During her time there, she engineered recordings of classical music\u2014now her forte, as a composer\u2014in addition to Chinese and Indian music, voiceover work, music videos, and assisted with film scoring sessions with a full orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worked with everyone from rap artists making beats, to death metal and heavy metal bands\u2014which is actually really fun,\u201d she recalled. \u201cIf I had to pick a genre as an engineer, I think I would choose some of the hard metal music, like punk\u2014people from that genre, when they\u2019re in the studio, they\u2019re very serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like many artists in the recording industry, she has worked her share of 16-hour days, and brought to Palomar an experience in the professional side of music that few students have at such a young age: \u201cThat was the best thing I could have possibly done,\u201d she said of her time at Studio West. \u201cI got a really good foundation in technology, working as an engineer for three years, until the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phipps started playing piano when she was 7, started writing music when she was 9, \u201cgot serious\u201d about music when she was 15\u2014when she resumed piano lessons\u2014and started playing and composing classical music after she came to Palomar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t really know all of the different avenues within music composition, but I wanted to take my education to the next level\u2014the theory, all of the different instruments,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted to be a serious composer, to know what I was doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible program,\u201d she said of her time at Palomar. \u201cAll of my classes have deepened my ability to write pieces that aren\u2019t just pretty, but also intellectual and interesting\u2014music that moves people and has a message and isn\u2019t just a bunch of notes pushed together. Everything the teachers here at Palomar have taught me, I\u2019ve pulled into my compositions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phipps spent the first month of this summer laboring over her best piece yet, entitled, \u201cGod Betwixt Me,\u201d for piano, alto and tenor. She sang the women\u2019s part, her friend Mitchell Ridgeway sang the tenor, and Palomar College Professor Ruth Weber recorded the piano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe added so much more life to the piece than I originally saw,\u201d Phipps said of Weber\u2019s recording.<\/p>\n<p>She entered the piece in the SDNM competition and won. Now she is looking toward the next chapter in her education and career, which will include recording a song cycle for Spotify and other streaming music platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Phipps said she is currently applying to universities in hopes of pursuing her undergraduate degree in music next year, after which: \u201cWe\u2019ll see. I\u2019m keeping my options open.
