{"id":4820,"date":"2022-03-03T17:36:20","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T01:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=4820"},"modified":"2022-03-03T17:36:20","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T01:36:20","slug":"palomar-to-host-celebrated-author-lawyer-haben-girma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/palomar-to-host-celebrated-author-lawyer-haben-girma\/","title":{"rendered":"Palomar to Host Celebrated Author, Lawyer Haben Girma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"open-para\">Haben Girma, the first Deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School, will speak at Palomar College in a hybrid in-person\/virtual event to be followed by a book signing on campus.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 The celebrated human rights lawyer Haben Girma, author of \u201cHaben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law,\u201d will speak during a special event in Brubeck Theatre at Palomar College to be held Monday, March 14, at 4:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, entitled, \u201cDisability &amp; Innovation: A Conversation with Haben Girma,\u201d the human rights lawyer will share how she became an advocate and what communities can do to become more inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of our bodies change over time,\u201d Girma said. \u201cWe all deserve dignity and access at every stage in our lives. Most people will need to seek accessibility solutions at some point, whether for a family member, a colleague, or for oneself. Disability is a part of the human experience. We all need to engage in the work to make our world accessible to everyone. Inclusion is a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Girma has been honored by numerous world leaders and was named White House Champion of Change by U.S. President Barack Obama. She is a champion of disability justice, and will bring an inspiring message to the Palomar College community, followed by a book signing at 5:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The event is being co-hosted by the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at Palomar College and\u00a0 MiraCosta College\u2019s Student Accessibility Services (SAS) department. For those who cannot or prefer not to attend in person, Girma\u2019s address will be streamed via Zoom. There is no cost for the event, but <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSe-D0uPXDmYKmWS05PvesCDmBuoWCTO6xC7QdbylEIwX2JLMg\/viewform\">registration is required<\/a> for both in person and online participation.
