The two trainees at Hanson Aggregates in San Diego each received a set of tools valued at $3,900 as part of a partnership between Palomar College and Project Cornerstone.<\/p>\n

SAN DIEGO \u2014 On their second day as apprentice mechanics at Hanson Aggregates, Jack Schwinkendorf and Sayra Martinez received bright blue tool boxes filled with Snap-On hand tools.<\/p>\n

The two students from Palomar College\u2019s Diesel Technology program were recently hired as part of a joint venture by Project Cornerstone, a local nonprofit, and the college. To help facilitate this program, Snap-On Tools contributed by providing the tools at a significant discount to Project Cornerstone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a huge leg up, in terms of getting a start,\u201d said Schwinkendorf, 22, who lives in Rancho Bernardo and will graduate from Palomar\u2019s Diesel Technology program later this year. \u201cThis is your foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martinez, 23, lives in Valley Center and comes from a family of truck drivers. When she started at Hanson on June 7, she became the first female diesel mechanic at the company\u2019s Miramar plant.<\/p>\n

\u201cHanson delivers concrete that helps build our community,\u201d she said. \u201cWorking in this field is really exciting, and I\u2019m really grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the field of diesel mechanics, as in other careers, it\u2019s customary for workers to own the tools that they use on the job. But for those who are just starting out, the cost can be a serious barrier to entry in the job market.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, companies that need diesel mechanics are struggling to find people to fill positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have these journeyman mechanics who have been here for 20 or 30 years\u2014they\u2019re great employees, they\u2019ve spent their careers here, but they\u2019re all retiring,\u201d said Hanson Human Resources Manager Tricia Reedy. \u201cAnd I can\u2019t find anybody to fill their spots. So we need to get these younger people in, get them trained, and then keep it going\u2014mechanics, drivers, equipment operators.\u201d<\/p>\n

Project Cornerstone Executive Director Crystal Howard said her organization\u2019s mission is to promote workforce development in the greater San Diego area. The nonprofit paid for the two new tool sets\u2014along with one last month for Palomar student Orlando Perez<\/a>\u2014with a grant from San Diego County\u2019s Neighborhood Reinvestment Program.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very fortunate to have this partnership and to work with great companies like Hanson to provide our students with an opportunity to take what they learn at Palomar into their chosen field,\u201d said Dr. Jack Kahn, Interim Superintendent\/President of Palomar College.<\/p>\n

At its sprawling concrete plant less than a mile south of the runway at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Hanson operates two major diesel mechanic shops\u2014one to maintain the on-site heavy machinery, and one to maintain the fleet of cement mixers and support vehicles that use public roads.<\/p>\n

Mike Charest, Hanson\u2019s On-Road Fleet Maintenance Manager, said finding any mechanics in the current job market is difficult\u2014and so many current mechanics are approaching retirement that it feels like they\u2019re \u201cstarting from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI started out just like them,\u201d said Charest, gesturing to Schwinkendorf and Martinez. \u201cI went to mechanic\u2019s school, graduated, got a job just like they\u2019re doing\u2014green as can be\u2014and spent most of my life working here.\u201d<\/p>\n

He described the job stability and camaraderie that he\u2019s experienced during his nearly four decades working as a mechanic and supervisor at the concrete plant.<\/p>\n

The two Palomar students, who will now be in training at Hanson for up to two years, seemed to know what a good opportunity it was.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone here is super cool, everyone has tons of experience,\u201d said Schwinkendorf. \u201cThese guys are a wealth of knowledge, so I\u2019m excited to learn from all of them. I\u2019ve always been a hands-on type of guy, and I found out by studying at Palomar that I really like this kind of work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to keep our communities going,\u201d added Martinez. \u201cI\u2019m really grateful for this opportunity. Even though women aren\u2019t seen much in this field, I hope I\u2019ll be able to inspire other women who might not feel capable.\u201d<\/p>\n
