{"id":4505,"date":"2021-04-23T17:07:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-24T00:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=4505"},"modified":"2025-07-10T14:23:49","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T21:23:49","slug":"palomars-speech-debate-team-excels-in-online-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/palomars-speech-debate-team-excels-in-online-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Palomar\u2019s Speech &amp; Debate Team Excels in Online Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"open-para\">The team is wrapping up an unorthodox but successful season, during which all events were held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 In a series of highly unusual competitions, held online due to COVID-19, the Speech &amp; Debate Team at Palomar College brought home numerous awards during a virtual season that recently concluded with a national contest.<\/p>\n<p>Through 10 virtual tournaments in the 2020-21 season, the team won 30 trophies and five sweepstakes\u2014a noble feat under normal circumstances, and even more impressive given the unique demands placed on this year\u2019s student competitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these events have been experienced from these students\u2019 homes\u2014from their bedrooms, from their living rooms,\u201d said Dewi Hokett, Director of Palomar\u2019s Speech &amp; Debate Team for some 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome teams actually stopped competing this year, but we had a mighty little team that kept going,\u201d Hokett added. \u201cWe competed in tournaments this year, and did very well\u2014including a good showing in the Phi Rho Pi national tournament, where there were over 250 students in competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Results: Palomar College Speech &amp; Debate Team<\/h2>\n<p><strong><i>April 4\u201310, 2021 \u2014 Phi Rho Pi National Tournament<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Palomar College Team \u2014 Gold Sweepstakes in Debate, Silver Sweepstakes Overall; Hindman Division<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raquel Parizeau \u2014 Bell Scroggins Award (Top Speaker, Parliamentary Debate)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kateri Mouawad and Raquel Parizeau \u2014 Silver Medal, Parliamentary Debate<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ana Del-Zio \u2014 Bronze Medal, International Public Debate<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raquel Parizeau \u2014 Bronze Medal, Prose and Drama<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kateri Mouawad \u2014 Bronze Medal, Extemporaneous Speaking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><i>March 10\u201314, 2021 \u2014 California Community College Forensics Association (CCCFA) State Championship Speech Tournament<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Palomar College Team \u2014 4th Place Sweepstakes; Limited Entry Division<\/li>\n<li>Raquel Parizeau \u2014 Jim Wyman Debate Award (Top Speaker)<\/li>\n<li>Kateri Mouawad and Raquel Parizeau \u2014 Gold Medal, Parliamentary Debate<\/li>\n<li>Ana Del-Zio \u2014 Bronze Medal, International Public Debate<\/li>\n<li>Cipriana Rodriguez \u2014 Silver Medal, Persuasive Speaking<\/li>\n<li>Kateri Mouawad \u2014 Silver Medal, Extemporaneous Speaking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDuring the last year, we have witnessed an incredible level of resilience throughout the college, and these students are great examples of how a group can come together and achieve their goals. I am absolutely thrilled for them,\u201d said Interim Superintendent\/President Dr. Jack Kahn.<\/p>\n<p>Hokett said the team this season consisted of seven competitors\u2014fewer than half the usual number for the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut our team worked really, really hard, and their awards are well-deserved, because these students were well-trained, they were focused, and all of this with a great deal going on in their lives,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m really, really proud of our team this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ana Del-Zio, who won several awards this spring for Palomar\u2019s team, said that she first experienced speech and debate competition in high school, where she learned the ropes: live audiences, jitters, and giant \u201cprep\u201d rooms where students were readying for their appearance on stage.<\/p>\n<p>Del-Zio said that, in front of her computer at home, her nerves were calmer\u2014but she also missed some aspects of competing live and in person: \u201cI feel like there was an advantage to being in your own space and being able to focus,\u201d she said. \u201cBut there wasn\u2019t the same type of energy as watching people give a speech live, watching their mannerisms. It\u2019s a lot less personal, in that sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like being in class\u2014more of a relaxed setting,\u201d said Kateri Mouawad, who also won a number of awards with the team. \u201cA part of me really wonders, would I perform the same in person? You don\u2019t have the same adrenaline, the same pressure, as if it was live.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still very, very grateful for the experience, and for all the work everybody put into it,\u201d Mouawad added.<\/p>\n<p>Del-Zio said the essential skills of speaking and debating\u2014how to talk, how to present oneself\u2014were still applicable, even in the virtual competitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m definitely glad I stuck with it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot harder, in the online environment, to stay motivated. But besides having something to put on my college applications, it was just a great learning experience.
