SAN MARCOS \u2014 Thanksgiving will be a little brighter in hundreds of local households next week, courtesy of the Palomar Faculty Federation (PFF), Council of Classified Employees (CCE) and Palomar College Foundation, which are teaming up with the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council to distribute 500 turkeys.<\/p>\n
Alongside the food distribution, several of Palomar\u2019s student support programs are collaborating\u00a0 to distribute academic supplies to students. These include 500 supply bundles purchased by the Associated Student Government (ASG), as well as free diapers for students who have pre-ordered them.<\/p>\n
The food distribution takes place starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 in Lot 12 at Palomar College. Like numerous previous distributions this year, the event is being held in a contactless, drive-through format to ensure safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are honored to be able to give back to our community during such trying times,\u201d said Interim Superintendent\/President Dr. Jack Kahn. \u201cIn this season of gratitude, we have our Foundation, PFF, CCE and community partners to thank for making this happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
The turkeys were purchased ahead of the event through a partnership between PFF and the Foundation, which each contributed $3,000, and SDG&E, which donated $4,000, said PFF Co-President Teresa Laughlin.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will be Thanksgiving-themed food to go along with it\u2014canned goods, perishables and produce,\u201d said Laughlin. \u201cWe started these distributions in June, and we\u2019ve served thousands of families so far. I wish we didn\u2019t have to do it\u2014I wish we were out of business, so to speak\u2014but it\u2019s been really positive for our community members.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our opportunity to stand with unions that are not just educators\u2014but iron workers, grocery workers, health care workers, utility unions, to name a few of those who have been showing up,\u201d said Serafin. \u201cI think the longer we\u2019re in this crisis, the more people are experiencing food insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are always supporting social justice, and this is something we can do for our students during a time when we\u2019re so disconnected,\u201d added Anel Gonzales, President of the CCE. \u201cWe\u2019re getting back to the reason unions exist\u2014to help people and make sure they have food on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lot 12 is located on the west side of campus, and can be accessed by turning onto Avenida Azul from North Las Posas Road. There is no registration needed to participate in the food distribution, and goods will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
