SAN MARCOS \u2013 Student journalists from The Telescope<\/i>, Palomar College\u2019s student newspaper and Impact<\/i>, its student magazine, earned 25 awards in design, writing, photography, copyediting and editorial cartoon at a regional conference put on by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC).<\/p>\n

Palomar students spent Oct. 5-6 at Cal State Fullerton competing against around 400 community college journalism students from community colleges in Southern California. The students were asked to report, photograph and write on deadline against the best community college journalists across the region. The students also attended a variety of workshops given by media professionals across the state.<\/p>\n

Most notably this year, The Telescope<\/i> and Impact<\/i> earned the award of General Excellence. That coveted award distinguishes Palomar\u2019s publications against other regional community college newspapers and magazines.<\/p>\n

For the conference competitions, Co-News Editor Ian Hanner won 2nd<\/sup> Place for Broadcast News Writing, while Photographer Peter Ashue won 2nd Place for an election photo he submitted for the conference.<\/p>\n

Photo Editor Brian Korec won 2nd<\/sup> Place for Sports Photography. The Telescope<\/i> Copy Editor Colleen Peters won 4th Place for Copy Editing while Co-News Editor Danielle Taylor won 4th Place for the News Writing Competition.\u00a0Three students earned honorable mentions: Photographer Jassamyn Payne for Editorial Illustration, Editor-in-Chief Kaity Bergquist for Copy Editing and Opinion Editor April Testerman for Opinion Writing.<\/p>\n

During the summer, Palomar\u2019s journalism staff culled the students\u2019 work from last spring and submitted newspaper and magazine entries for consideration. Palomar was awarded 16 awards from that work, including Meritious awards in Enterprise Reporting for Hanner and Sports Editor Gio Nieto for a series they wrote on Student Success.<\/p>\n

Impact<\/i> staff won\u00a01st Place for Magazine Layout and for its Magazine Cover. Meanwhile magazine writers Justin\u00a0Masanque and Shaun Kahmann tied for 2nd\u00a0Place for their magazine profile features. Kahmann won another 2nd place for Opinion Writing and an honorable mention for a magazine opinion story.<\/p>\n

Newspaper staffers Kelli Miller, Testerman and Peters won Honorable Mention for News Feature, News Story and Sports Writing, respectively.<\/p>\n

In the layout categories, The Telescope staff won 2nd Place for Front Page Layout and 3rd Place for Inside Page Layout. Designer Natalie Soldoff won 4th Place for\u00a0Inside Page Layout.<\/p>\n

Magazine Staffer Kiigan Snaer won 4th Place for Magazine Feature Photo and Magazine Illustration, while Photographer Dan\u00a0Chambers won Honorable Mention for Feature Photo.<\/p>\n
