Rocco Versaci and Carlton Smith (pictured above, left and right, at microphone) expanded Bravura and brought the annual publication into the internet age. Now the 54-year-old magazine is getting two new faculty advisers.<\/p>\n

SAN MARCOS \u2014 For more than half a century, creative writers attending Palomar College have been publishing their work in Bravura, a literary journal designed and produced by students and overseen by a team of faculty from Palomar\u2019s English department.<\/p>\n

Since 2000, that team has consisted of Rocco Versaci and Carlton Smith, creative writing teachers who put Bravura online for the first time with their inaugural issue and made several other major changes while the journal was in their hands.<\/p>\n

Now the duo is handing the journal off to two younger faculty, Clare Rolens and Stacey Trujillo.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had a really good time with it,\u201d Versaci said during a recent interview in his office. \u201cI can\u2019t speak for Carlton, but I feel like we\u2019ve taken it about as far as we can, and now it\u2019s time for our younger faculty to have their hand in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea of Bravura has always been to give young writers a taste of getting published, as well as to lead a dedicated class of students\u2014ENG 137, offered every spring\u2014through the production process. In 2004, Smith and Versaci added a gala and awards for the best prose, poetry and visual arts every year.<\/p>\n

\u201cBravura definitely gives students a forum for their creative work,\u201d said Versaci. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of artistry going on all over the campus, and Bravura is a place where students can show their work.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, the students who enroll in the course get the experience of working on a publication and learning all the ins and outs, working collaboratively,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Rolens, one of the new Bravura faculty advisers, said she feels honored to be taking over a project with such a rich history at Palomar.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely feels like we\u2019ve got big shoes to fill\u2014it\u2019s intimidating, but it\u2019s exciting,\u201d said Rolens. \u201cStacey and I have already learned so much from Rocco and Carlton. Palomar\u2019s English Department is really special\u2014not every community college has such a wide range of literature classes or such a good literary magazine. So I\u2019m excited to be a part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

During Smith and Versaci\u2019s tenure, Bravura won two national awards from the Community College Humanities Association, and Versaci remembered attending a conference in Chicago and sitting in a breakout session with other literary journal advisers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost everyone else I talked to had to hire editors, had to beg for money every year\u2014they put a lot of energy into just ensuring its survival, and it wasn\u2019t a teaching environment,\u201d he said. \u201cHere, it\u2019s a learning experience for the students. We\u2019re really lucky to have this at Palomar. Many community colleges don\u2019t\u2014even a lot of four-year schools don\u2019t have anything like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rolens said she and Trujillo are spending the summer working on the strategy for their first issue of Bravura next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re learning the ropes, we\u2019re making sure it has the quality it has had for so long,\u201d she said. \u201cAs we work, I think we\u2019ll kind of figure out how we\u2019re going to put our stamp on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, she said, Bravura represents the value of opportunity that Palomar can offer its students: \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what a community college is supposed to do\u2014to empower people, but also to prepare them for things beyond the community college.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students who would like to work on Bravura should enroll in ENG 137 in the spring, and students wishing to submit their creative writing, photography or artwork may do so by emailing bravurasubmissions@gmail.com.<\/p>\n
