{"id":2273,"date":"2018-04-18T16:22:09","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T23:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=2273"},"modified":"2025-05-14T14:37:01","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T21:37:01","slug":"political-economy-days-spring-2018-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/political-economy-days-spring-2018-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts bring diverse topics together for Political Economy Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"open-para\">The latest installment of Palomar\u2019s lecture series offers fresh views, latest research on broad array of themes relevant in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 During two days of lectures by experts from Palomar College and beyond, students and guests heard presentations on April 11-12 about international relations, immigration, food insecurity, clean energy and more.<\/p>\n<p>The semi-annual Political Economy Days lecture series wrapped up Thursday at Palomar, where sessions were spread across campus and well-attended\u2014sometimes to standing-room only.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the talks were enriching, informative and very, very germane, especially in these times,\u201d said event organizer Peter Bowman, who teaches Political Science at Palomar. \u201cThey were all relevant to this very unique era in American society and in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the sessions were packed,\u201d Bowman added, \u201cand there was a lot of interaction between the presenters and attendees.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Stories of Education After Prison\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Students filled the Governing Board Room to capacity on Wednesday afternoon, as a panel of formerly incarcerated people discussed the difficulties and joys of pursuing higher education after having served time behind bars.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2274\" style=\"width: 1510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2274\" class=\"wp-image-2274 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5.jpg\" alt=\"Panel discussion taking place in front of an audience at Political Economy Days\" width=\"1500\" height=\"998\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5-1080x719.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2018\/04\/Political-Economy-Days-1-of-5-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panelists Martin Leyva, Gregory Mendoza, Jose Juarez and Patty Petersen participate in a Political Economy Days event on Wednesday, April 11.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been out of prison 11 years today, and it\u2019s a blessing,\u201d said Martin Leyva, a graduate student at Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM). \u201cIn prison, it\u2019s a survival game. It\u2019s a very dehumanizing experience. But I fell in love with education. I wish they had a Ph.D. for marginal education, because I learned on the margins, and I brought those margins into the classroom with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panelist Jose Juarez recalled getting out of juvenile hall with an ankle monitor and living on a first-name basis with the local police. Now Juarez is working his way through the mathematics program at Palomar, with plans to transfer to a four-year university and someday become an engineer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy journey brought me here,\u201d said Patty Petersen, a formerly incarcerated person who studied at Palomar and is now a Student Support Specialist in the Disability Resource Center at the college. \u201cIf I had not gone to school, I would still be in prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI come out here every day with a smile on my face because this is better than what I was doing,\u201d added Gregory Mendoza.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018From the Classroom to the Situation Room\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>On Wednesday, a former Obama Administration staffer spoke about his experiences as a Contracting Officer\u2014a post that combined politics and economics. Barack Obama at the Presidential Inauguration.
