{"id":2022,"date":"2017-11-30T17:02:29","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T01:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=2022"},"modified":"2017-12-04T14:06:53","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T22:06:53","slug":"social-media-certificate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/social-media-certificate\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond the status update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"open-para\">New certificate in Social Media trains students in the art of engaging customers online in a rapidly evolving landscape.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 In the spring of 2013, Palomar Business Professor Mary Cassoni took a sabbatical to learn more about social media and the ways that it was already beginning to disrupt a variety of information-centric industries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t help but see that social media had become this formidable force in marketing and communications,\u201d Cassoni recalled. \u201cBack when I started teaching here (in 2005), students were talking about MySpace. That was the only social media platform at the time, and the term \u2018social media\u2019 hadn\u2019t been invented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed with notorious speed, and with the rise of social media came seismic shifts in how virtually every business connects with their customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of how business professionals operate today, it\u2019s definitely been what we call a disruptive force. To get information out there (in the past), there was always a middleman. It sort of cuts out the middleman,\u201d said Cassoni. \u201cAnyone can get his or her message out to the masses without having to go through a news bureau.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While most students in 2017 will arrive with plenty of casual experience on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, Cassoni pointed out, \u201cWhat they haven\u2019t learned are some of the business reasons behind what would make social media the right platform for your message, product or service. Social media is not advertising, and it isn\u2019t necessarily journalism, either. To me, it\u2019s sort of a melding of the two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To prepare students for careers in which social media plays a central role, Cassoni and her colleagues in the Graphic Communications department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/business\/new-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">created a seven-class, 18-unit certificate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be able to give students both the technical skills they need and the foundational skills they need in social media so they can get entry-level jobs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cassoni recalled the first time she taught a social media class. She expected to see the same cross-section of students, averaging 26 years old working on degrees or transferring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the last minute, I said, you know what, I\u2019m going to offer this in the late afternoon just because I have a feeling we might get a wider population,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I was right. We got entrepreneurs of every age\u2014people who owned a business and knew this social media thing was up-and-coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also had an 84-year-old woman who used to be a journalist and wanted to learn how to use the social media platforms,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Some may think there\u2019s nothing more to social media than posting updates, but Cassoni said using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms well as a businessperson takes sound training and up-to-date knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good social media that drives engagement isn\u2019t yelling at you, like, \u2018Buy my product!\u2019 It\u2019s inviting you to have a relationship with the product,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New certificate in Social Media trains students in the art of engaging customers online in a rapidly evolving landscape.
