{"id":1869,"date":"2017-10-27T13:49:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T20:49:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=1869"},"modified":"2025-07-08T12:37:01","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T19:37:01","slug":"political-economy-days-fall-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/political-economy-days-fall-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Lecture series explores wide range of current events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Political Economy Days draws hundreds of students for lectures ranging from climate change to labor movements to white privilege.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 In a darkened theater at Palomar College on Wednesday afternoon, 200 people gathered for a one-man show about an influential labor organizer in mid-20th-century San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>The following day in a packed lecture hall, at least 100 others turned up for a panel discussion entitled, \u201cWhat is Whiteness?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, attendees were learning about climate change, globalization, civil unrest, and the history of kneeling as a social statement.<\/p>\n<p>Across campus on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 25-26, presenters from a variety of institutions and backgrounds engaged students on politics, economics and social issues. Photo by Melinda Finn.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The presentations were held in various locations around campus, including the Howard Brubeck Theater and the Governing Board meeting room. You might work two hours, eight hours, 24 hours, 36 hours straight. And if you didn\u2019t like it, you could go to hell. There were any number of reasons you could go to hell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen men go home with their feet bleeding, seen them drop dead on the job,\u201d he went on. \u201cI\u2019ve seen old men trying to keep up with the young men because they had no pension, they had nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridges eventually organized San Francisco\u2019s dock workers, a movement that galvanized into a historic four-day general strike encompassing 64 unions in the Bay Area: \u201cWe went out on strike as wharf rats, but we came back as lords of the docks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ILWU was formed in 1937 and now includes more than 33,000 workers on the West Coast, Hawaii, Alaska, and British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>After Ruskin\u2019s performance, students had questions about unions and Bridges, whom Ruskin had convincingly brought to life.<\/p>\n<p>As a Royal Academy-trained actor, Ruskin, of Culver City, estimated that he has performed the Bridges show at least 250 times.<\/p>\n<p>He said he wants his audience \u201cto realize that these people were real, flesh-and-blood guys. There\u2019s obviously information in the play, but just the fact that men struggled the way they did\u201d brings the history to life.<\/p>\n<h2>Exploring the essence of whiteness<\/h2>\n<p>In a very different type of presentation on Thursday, four of Palomar\u2019s English and Humanities faculty shared a panel on the topic, \u201cWhat is Whiteness?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many ways, it originated here in the New World,\u201d explained English Professor Martin Japtok, presenting an overview of the concept of racial identity and power dynamics in the Americas. \u201cIt\u2019s a process, in a sense, that began with Columbus. Photo by Melinda Finn.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>English Professor Clare Rolens walked students through the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson case, in which the Supreme Court upheld racial segregation laws and the concept of \u201cseparate but equal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhiteness, undoubtedly, was a legal category for most of U.S. history,\u201d Rolens explained. \u201cIt worked as a tool of exclusion. It was invented to exclude.
