{"id":1679,"date":"2017-09-26T08:47:17","date_gmt":"2017-09-26T15:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=1679"},"modified":"2025-05-07T13:13:39","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T20:13:39","slug":"california-indian-day-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/california-indian-day-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"California Indian Day celebrated with stories, music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"open-para\">Award-winning musician, youth storytellers among presentations hosted by Palomar College\u2019s American Indian Studies Department in 44th annual celebration.<\/p>\n<p>SAN MARCOS \u2014 Drawing on a long tradition of serving and honoring North County\u2019s tribes, Palomar College celebrated California Indian Day on Thursday, Sept. 21 with a series of intimate, interactive presentations inside the Brubeck Theater.<\/p>\n<p>From traditional storytelling and music to the personal recollections of a celebrated recording artist, the college\u2019s 44th annual observance of the state holiday drew nearly 100 people for an afternoon that highlighted tribal contributions to the region\u2019s culture and history.<\/p>\n<p>American Indian Studies Professor Patricia Dixon said that the Rincon Band of Luise\u00f1o Indians was represented heavily at this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tend to be fairly quiet, as a people. We don\u2019t really talk about ourselves,\u201d said Dixon, adding that California Indian Day is a chance to do just that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Indians are a living people, they\u2019re not just icons of the past,\u201d said Dixon, who is herself a member of the Pauma Band of Luise\u00f1o Mission Indians. \u201cAnd yet, they feel a great connection to the past, and they try to integrate it where they can. Our job is to let people see that bigger picture, see more than Indians who were conquered in war and live on reservations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker on Thursday was Native American Music Award-winner Alfonso Kolb, a long-time drummer who was born and raised in Rincon; he now serves on the tribal council there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1663\" style=\"width: 1345px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1663\" class=\"wp-image-1663 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/CA-Indian-Day-4513-2.jpg\" alt=\"Alfonso Kolb talking to students at Palomar College during the California Indian Day celebration\" width=\"1335\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/CA-Indian-Day-4513-2.jpg 1335w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/CA-Indian-Day-4513-2-1080x1618.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/CA-Indian-Day-4513-2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/CA-Indian-Day-4513-2-768x1151.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/CA-Indian-Day-4513-2-684x1024.jpg 684w, https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/CA-Indian-Day-4513-2-1024x1534.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1335px) 100vw, 1335px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eight-time Native American Music Award-winner Alfonso Kolb talks to students at Palomar College during the California Indian Day celebration on Sept. 21.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kolb, 57, recalled starting his life in music on the reservation as a teenager, playing with his cousins and brother in a local band: \u201cMy dad asked us, \u2018Do you guys know that song, Far Far Away?\u2019 We said, \u2018No.\u2019 He said, \u2018You go play far, far away over there,\u2019 because we were making so much noise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although he didn\u2019t realize it at the time, Kolb\u2019s career would begin in earnest with an audition in Escondido for a spot as a drummer with a more serious group of musicians. He quickly found himself in a recording studio in New Mexico, and then touring the U.S. with his new band, Winterhawk.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, he described performing in spiritual terms: \u201cThe experience you get from playing an instrument alone is magical, but when you connect with two or three others, it\u2019s beyond that. You feel what they\u2019re playing, you know where they\u2019re going, and it inspires you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kolb would go on to record several albums with Winterhawk and the Jim Boyd Band, and has won eight Native American Music Awards. He moved back to Rincon six years ago and is serving his second term as a tribal council member there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe chairman, he\u2019ll tease me and say, \u2018You\u2019re not a musician anymore, you\u2019re a politician,\u2019\u201d Kolb said. \u201cI don\u2019t say anything, but I\u2019m thinking, \u2018No, I\u2019m always going to be a musician. That\u2019s what I eat, breathe and live for.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kolb\u2019s presentation was followed by Abe and Cassie Calac, who come from different tribes and told their story of overcoming the cultural differences in marriage.
