{"id":141,"date":"2014-09-03T14:40:42","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T21:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/?p=141"},"modified":"2025-07-29T13:48:51","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T20:48:51","slug":"palomar-college-helps-geographic-information-systems-students-obtain-bachelors-degrees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/news\/palomar-college-helps-geographic-information-systems-students-obtain-bachelors-degrees\/","title":{"rendered":"Palomar College Helps Geographic Information Systems Students Obtain Bachelor&#8217;s Degrees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN MARCOS \u2013 \u00a0Through a unique collaboration between Palomar College and Marshall University, based in West Virginia, Palomar students will now be able to move seamlessly toward a bachelor\u2019s degree (B.S. or B.A.) \u00a0in geography after receiving a certificate of achievement in geographic information systems (GIS) at Palomar.<\/p>\n<p>Wing Cheung, Associate Professor of geography at Palomar, said that GIS is comprised of hardware \u00a0and software that make it possible \u201cto map and identify trends and patterns in data.\u201d Just a few of the many industries that depend on GIS data are: crime prevention, public health, conservation, engineering, education, government, utilities, marketing\/development, transportation, insurance, emergency planning, archaeology, anthropology, and urban planning. Cheung worked with the Chair of the geography department at Marshall to develop this opportunity for Palomar students. Cheung said, \u201cThis is an unprecedented, exciting opportunity for our GIS students who wish to get a bachelor\u2019s degree in geography with an emphasis in GIS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on to explain that students in the program will complete the requirements for the certificate of achievement in GIS at Palomar the first two years, then take online courses through Marshall University (a public research university) to finish their bachelor\u2019s degree in years three and four. \u201cAll of the required Marshall University courses can be done online,\u201d Cheung said, \u201cso there is no need to move to West Virginia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cheung stated the \u201cmany advantages\u201d of this educational opportunity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly all GIS and general education courses completed by Palomar students will apply toward their Geography degree at Marshall.<\/li>\n<li>A bachelor\u2019s degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field such as GIS will enhance students\u2019 competitiveness in the job market.<\/li>\n<li>All of Marshall University\u2019s courses can be completed online, so there is no need to relocate.<\/li>\n<li>The cost of getting a bachelor\u2019s degree through this arrangement is comparable to the tuition costs of public universities in the San Diego region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, Geographer is listed as an occupation that is experiencing \u201cmuch faster than average\u201d growth, with a median salary of $74,760 per year. Similarly, on the \u00a0U.S. Department of Labor website, \u00a0the Geospatial Industry is listed as one of its 13 \u201chigh growth industries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Sourbeer, Palomar\u2019s Dean of the Natural and Health Sciences said, \u201cGIS is a growing and important field.
