SAN MARCOS (August 13, 2026)<\/strong> \u2013 The 24 students in Palomar College\u2019s new bachelor\u2019s degree program in Building Performance and Environmental Design<\/a> are getting their supplies and materials at no cost thanks to a grant that Hunter Industries provided to the Palomar College Foundation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fall semester starts on August 24 and marks the first time that Palomar College is offering a baccalaureate degree.  The innovative degree program prepares students for careers in the design and operation of climate-responsive buildings. It integrates architecture, interior design, sustainability and environmental systems while aligning with LEED standards and building performance modeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $12,000 grant for supplies from Hunter Industries provides $500 in direct support to each of the 24 students while they pursue the 2-year degree program. The funds cover material fees such as textbooks, building performance modeling software, tools, technical equipment, and a professional blazer with the program logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hunter Industries is proud to be a longtime supporter of Palomar College,” said Katie Johanski, Director of Risk Management at Hunter Industries and Chair of the Palomar College Foundation Board. “These students represent the next generation of professionals who will help shape a more sustainable built environment. We\u2019re excited to invest in their education and provide the tools and resources they need to succeed and strengthen our community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph Lucido, Palomar College lead faculty and program director, said the program costs students about $15,000, compared to four-year university programs that can cost up to $150,000. \u201cIt\u2019s an epic shift,\u201d Lucido said. \u201cOur college can build competent architects with a price point that can be affordable for the student.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Building Performance and Environmental Design bachelor\u2019s degree offers a new option for San Diego County students seeking a career in architecture. Only a few private colleges offer a degree, and programs at San Diego State University have limited enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur focus is to make sure every student achieves their educational goals, while positively impacting their economic mobility and that of their families,\u201d said Palomar College Interim Superintendent\/President, Dr. Tina Recalde. The Building Performance and Environmental Design bachelor\u2019s degree is a perfect example of how students benefit from the mission and vision of Palomar College. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in the program will be able to take their architectural licensing exams before they graduate. Students will be required to work in an office for several hours, working with firms that are partnering with Palomar College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palomar College continues to enroll students for the fall semester.\u00a0 The college offers over 250 certificates and associate degrees, most of which like the bachelor\u2019s degree, are aligned with the needs of the region\u2019s workforce.
