Nine Award Nominations for Palomar’s KKSM Radio Program

KKSM is nominated for Best Community College Radio Station; Palomar students and staff also up for awards at March 3 event in NYC.

SAN MARCOS, CA ― Likely extending their streak of award-winning seasons, Palomar College’s radio and television programs advanced to the finals with nine nominations in a nationwide competition hosted by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).

Named Best Community College Radio Station in last year’s IBS contest, Palomar’s KKSM radio station (AM 1320) was nominated again for the top honor, and fielded eight other award nominations.

“This represents a lot of hard work by our students to remain innovative and competitive in the broadcast industry,” said KKSM Station Manager Zeb Navarro. “These nominations involve the hard work and determination of the staff and the measures KKSM has been taking to remain relevant and competitive in a changing broadcasting landscape.”

The finalized nominations were announced on Tuesday, Jan. 16. For KKSM, the potential trophies include:

  • Best Specialty Music Show, Funk Yo Lunch with Ed Rosa
  • Best Foreign Language Show, Spanglish con Ana with Ana Martinez
  • Best Podcast, In My Mind with Katia Brunson
  • Best Liner, Kristina Thomas
  • Best Audio Engineer, Lydia Arguello
  • Best Use of Video in a Radio Studio, Rob Blackwell and Kory Almryde, Not So Serious Radio
  • Best On-Air Pledge Drive, College Radio Day Pledge Drive
  • Best Music Library/Playlist

In addition to KKSM’s nominations, Palomar’s Digital Broadcast Arts program fielded four television nominations from the IBS:

  • Best TV Newscast, North County News, produced by Spencer Joseph and Abel Garcia
  • Best TV Sportscast, Prep Sports Live, produced by Edgardo Marquina
  • Best TV Talk Program, Palomar Live, produced by Cody Jendro
  • Best TV Commercial/Promotion, Digital Broadcast Arts, produced by Jon Beltz.
