The movie set to be released during Veterans Day weekend this year.\u00a0Emmerich\u00a0has had a long career of directing films, as audiences recognize his work his work from films like the Patriot &amp; Independence Day. Additionally, a lot of new information from documentaries, books and historians emerged just in time for the filming process. Emmerich expressed that this film is a good reminder to the audiences and younger audiences that there were young people in our past history who were fighting for democracy. Further hoping that this film both educates and entertains audience\u2019s as they also realize what a united America can do contrast to the current divide of people we see in society today. Hey Mr. Roland, how are you doing today?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019m very good this morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>Welcome to San Diego.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:<\/strong>\u00a0Yes\u2026 It was a busy drive down here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>Oh yeah, traffic can be a little bit crazy here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:<\/strong>\u00a0Took me forever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s a little bit cold too. So, for the past two decades, you\u2019ve been wanting to make this film, Midway. What inspired you to direct and\u2026 what was the reason why you wanted to bring this particular film in the big screen?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:<\/strong>\u00a0Well it\u2019s like kind of, the biggest comeback story of WWII. Because it starts you know, kind of like\u2026 the attack on\u2026 Pearl Harbor. And\u2026 a lot of people lost, a lot of lot of, friends and-and family\u2026and so, uh, and out of that\u2026 came this kind of like push to\u2026 to kind of change the course of the war. That American\u2019s were really really the underdogs. In this kind of fight. It\u2019s amazing actually to tell the story of these young men\u2026uh in, you know uh, how they managed to kind of uh\u2026 defeat you know\u2026 actually the biggest battle of the WWII. Navy Battle\u2026 [in the war].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>I actually saw the movie, a couple weeks ago in San Diego Premiere, what kind of research did you go into the process? Did you actually talk to WWII historians? Pearl Harbor Survivors?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:<\/strong>\u00a0Yes, We did everything. We did everything, we did\u2026. we read every book there is to read, watch a lot a lot of documentaries about um, what-what happened then and um\u2026 and then actually we got a lot of support from the Navy. And everybody [constantly] called\u2026 and asked questions. This was very important. And then we have, on the set, always, military you know like, Historians with us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>You also directed one of our favorite films Independence Day (1996), how do you compare the scope of that project to this project in the film making process?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:\u00a0<\/strong>[It\u2019s been more than 20 years] since I did Independence Day. A lot has happened, especially in visual effects [and technology]. I actually wanted to make\u2026 Midway [back then, 20 years ago] but, at the time\u2026 I had just signed a huge deal with Columbia Tristar. When I learned how expensive this movie then would have been, and um\u2026 maybe people don\u2019t know that but it\u2019s now like Sony Pictures. And then they already had bought that studio, they just didn\u2019t want to go for it. To make a movie like that expensive\u2026 about a battle that they lost. But! It\u2019s good that I do the movie now, because the technology is so much better. Also, I think it\u2019s good to remind people today you know like, the rising nationalism and the totally divided America, what like a united America could do, can do. And how, at the time people faught for freedom against Fascism. And you know what, it\u2019s like, we always kind of like think, Oh this could never ever happen again. But you know, it could. And it\u2019s good to remind all the young people, that like kind of people their age you know put their life on the line, fighting for democracy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>Absolutely. There\u2019s so much history to soak up in this storyline. What do you want the audience to get from this message, especially the younger generation when it comes to Pearl Harbor and WWII stories?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:<\/strong>\u00a0To educate them\u2026 First, I want to entertain them because I think it\u2019s a relatively entertaining movie. With some\u2026 incredible flying scenes, but it\u2019s also to\u2026 educate them, [on] what happened there. Because a lot of people know the word Midway, but they don\u2019t know what exactly went down. And that\u2019s why we also like kind of describe not only the battle, we try to describe the whole 6 months leading up to the battle. And\u2026 yeah, that\u2019s kind of the main purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>You\u2019re a huge fan of historical films, is there any other projects that you hope to work on next time? When it comes to historical film events?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roland Emerich:<\/strong>\u00a0Well\u2026 I\u2019m planning actually a movie about the silent movie days. Because I\u2019m uh\u2026 I think\u2026 like me working 40 years in film\u2026 I want to just uh, make a love letter to the\u2026 job I have. It\u2019s such\u2026 a pleasure to make movies you know? And it\u2019s such a cool\u2026 thing to do. And I just want to do a love letter to what I do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host:\u00a0<\/strong>Awesome! Okay! Well Roland thank you so much for joining us today.
