Don\u2019t miss this opportunity to learn about the impactful history and future of student activism at Palomar College.<\/td><td>MD-328&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Tuesday,<br>October 8th<\/td><td>1:00pm<\/td><td><strong>Screening of La Mujer de Estrellas y Monta\u00f1as<\/strong><\/td><td>A Tarahumara woman, Rita left her community in northern Mexico in the early 1980s and walked across the border all the way to Kansas. When the American authorities found her, she was forcefully committed to a psychiatric hospital for 12 years. Throughout this time, her identity and even the language she speaks was unknown to the medical authorities. Now back in her hometown, the horrific episode still haunts her and her loved ones. This visually striking documentary opens a window into Rita\u2019s inner world.&nbsp;The screening will end with a (10-minute) Q&amp;A discussion moderated by Henry Lesperance. The presentation celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and intends to further the audience&#8217;s understanding of cross-cultural competency in healthcare.<\/td><td>MD-157<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Wednesday, October 9th<\/td><td>10:00am<\/td><td><strong>Are Migrants Really Eating People\u2019s Pets?<\/strong><\/td><td>In the last two decades, immigration has been central to both political parties&#8217; campaigns in the U.S. The intense debates about migration, security, and humanitarian issues along the U.S.-Mexican Border. As migrants flee violence, poverty, and political instability in Central and South America, the challenge of managing migration while respecting human rights is highlighted. Dia de Muertos Calavera poems have also been a long-standing oral and written tradition dating back to the late nineteenth century in which people discuss mortality and political issues. In addition, the popularity of Dia de Muertos in the United States has increased significantly since the Chicano Movement of the 1960s as well as more recently with well-known movies like Disney&#8217;s Coco.
