¡Bienvenidos!
A Tarahumara woman, Rita left her community in northern Mexico in the early 1980s and walked across the border all the way to Kansas. When the American authorities found her, she was forcefully committed to a psychiatric hospital for 12 years. Throughout this time, her identity and even the language she speaks was unknown to the medical authorities. Now back in her hometown, the horrific episode still haunts her and her loved ones. This visually striking documentary opens a window into Rita’s inner world. The screening will end with a (10-minute) Q&A discussion moderated by Henry Lesperance. The presentation celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and intends to further the audience’s understanding of cross-cultural competency in healthcare.
