Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a sacred indigenous tradition with centuries of history. Dia de Muertos Calavera poems have also been a long-standing oral and written tradition dating back to the late nineteenth century in which people discuss mortality and political issues. In addition, the popularity of Dia de Muertos in the United States has increased significantly since the Chicano Movement of the 1960s as well as more recently with well-known movies like Disney’s Coco. Join Ethnic Studies professor Laura Padilla for a calavera poem writing workshop and a short presentation exploring the origins of Dia de Muertos in the United States as a form of resistance to racism and oppression.
