{"id":724,"date":"2015-10-28T17:34:42","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T17:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/?page_id=724"},"modified":"2025-03-18T11:43:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T18:43:04","slug":"transportation-seasonal-driving-recommendations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/transportation-seasonal-driving-recommendations\/","title":{"rendered":"Transportation &#8211; Seasonal Driving Recommendations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Before you start\u2026.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Check the weather forecast and postpone your trip if necessary.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Please contact the Facilities Office if you will be cancelling your reservation as to not incur a no-show fee.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Ensure your vehicle is well maintained:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Fluid levels full.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Tires properly inflated and worn tires replaced<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Wipers in good condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><u><span class=\"style21\">Do not <\/span><\/u><span class=\"style21\">drive when you are tired.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Driving in Fog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style37\" style=\"text-align: justify\">The best advice for driving in fog is &#8220;Don&#8217;t.&#8221; It is better to pull off the road into a rest area or truck stop, if available, until visibility is better. If you must drive, be sure to consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style34\">Obey all fog-related warning signs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style34\">Slow before you enter fog.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style34\">Turn on all your lights. (Headlights should be on low beams).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style34\">Be prepared for emergency stops.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Poor Visibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Reduce your speed so you can stop in whatever distance you can see ahead.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Use your flashers if you are going slow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Pull over if it is dangerous to drive.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Remember to use your wipers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Use low-beams when visibility is a problem, both day and night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Wear sunglasses when there is glare from snow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">If snow or ice builds up on your windshield, stop and clean if off.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Rain Hazards<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Stay out of puddles.\u00a0 They can hide potholes and flood your brakes.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">If your brakes get flooded, dry them by driving with the brake pedal down until they start working again.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">If spray from an oncoming vehicle blinds you, grip the wheel firmly, stay off the brake, and be ready to break when the view clears.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Slippery Roads (wet or icy)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Avoid braking heavily.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">If you skid, take your foot off the gas and turn in the direction you want the vehicle to go.\u00a0 <u>Do not<\/u> use the brake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Stay below posted speed limits<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">To avoid hydroplaning on wet roads, try to drive in the tracks of the vehicle in front of you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Watch for icy patches on bridges and in the shade<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Summer Driving<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">According to the National Safety Council, more motor vehicle injuries and fatalities occur during summer than any other season. Leading causes include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">High speeds<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Impaired or careless driving<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Not using safety belts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style37\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>The National Safety Council offers the following tips to keep trips safe and fun:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"style21\">Drive at the speed limit.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Speeding is a factor in about a third of all vehicle crash facilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"style21\">Prepare your vehicle for the road.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Clean headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows once a week, if not more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"style21\">If your vehicle breaks down on the highway, pull off the road as far as possible.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Warn approaching traffic by setting flares or reflecting triangles near your vehicle and 100 feet behind it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Stay off the roadway and get passengers away from the vehicle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"style21\">For longer trips, allow enough travel time for frequent breaks for rest, snacks and exercise.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Drowsiness\u2019 can reduce reaction time almost as much as drinking.\u00a0 If you are too tired to drive, stop and rest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Danger signs of fatigue include eye strain, blurred vision, head dropping, yawning, swaying out of the lane, or an urge to close your eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"style21\">Drive defensively.\u00a0 Be alert.\u00a0 If you notice that a car is straddling the center lines, weaving, making wide turns, stopping abruptly or responding slowly to traffic signals, the driver may be impaired.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">Avoid an impaired driver ahead by slowing down to increase the following distance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style21\">If the impaired driver is behind, turn right at the nearest corner.\u00a0 Notify the police after seeing a motorist who is driving suspiciously.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"style21\">Follow the rules of the road.\u00a0 Don\u2019t contest the \u201cright-of-way\u201d or try to race another car while trying to merge into another lane.\u00a0 Be respectful of other motorists.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before you start\u2026.
