{"id":700,"date":"2015-10-28T16:36:16","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T16:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/?page_id=700"},"modified":"2025-03-18T11:42:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T18:42:13","slug":"transportation-maintenance-and-mechanical","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/transportation-maintenance-and-mechanical\/","title":{"rendered":"Transportation &#8211; Maintenance and Mechanical"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"style40\" style=\"text-align: justify\">The Palomar College Fleet Vehicles are maintained and serviced by the College on a regular basis and in accordance with the manufacturer\u2019s specification; however problems may arise while in use.\u00a0 All mechanical problems must be reported to the Facilities Office immediately to arrange for repairs or to provide a replacement vehicle.\u00a0 The driver should not make any repairs or contract for services.\u00a0 If a driver would make a repair, and an injury or accident would occur due to that repair, all financial and\/or legal liability would fall solely on the driver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style40\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Whenever possible, minor repairs and all maintenance of College vehicles will be performed in the Facilities Department\u2019s Auto Shop.\u00a0 Contract vendors are used for specialized work as needed, as determined by the Auto Mechanic and the Facilities Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style40\" style=\"text-align: justify\">The Palomar College Facilities Office mandates an inspection of all College vehicles prior to warranty expiration to ensure the College receives the full value of the warranty provisions.\u00a0 The owner\u2019s manual supplied with each new vehicle contains the warranty coverage for that vehicle.\u00a0 The Facilities Department\u2019s Auto Shop will tracking warranty expirations for the College\u2019s vehicles and will schedule the inspections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style37\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Inspections \u2013 What to Look For<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style38\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"style35\">As you approach the vehicle, <\/span><span class=\"style21\">notice its general condition.\u00a0 Look for damage.\u00a0 Is the vehicle leaning to one side?\u00a0 Look under the vehicle for fresh oil, coolant, grease, or fuel leaks.\u00a0 Check the area around the vehicle for hazards to vehicle movement such as people, other vehicles, objects, low hanging wires, or tree limbs, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style40\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Check that the parking brakes are on and\/or the wheels are chocked.\u00a0 You may have to raise the hood, tilt the cab (secure loose objects first), or open the engine compartment door.\u00a0 Check the following:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">Tire Problems<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">.\u00a0 It is dangerous to drive with bad tires.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">REMEMBER<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">: After a tire has been changed, stop a short while later and recheck the tightness of the wheel fasteners.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">Wheel and Rim Problems<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">.\u00a0 A damaged rim can cause a tire to lose pressure or come off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">Bad Brake Drum or Shoe Lining Problems<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">.\u00a0 It is dangerous to drive with brake problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">Steering System Defects<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">. A poorly maintained steering system can cause steering problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">Suspension System Defects<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">. The suspension system supports the vehicle and its load and keeps the axles in place. Broken suspension parts can be extremely dangerous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">Exhaust System Defects<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">. A broken exhaust system can let poisonous fumes into the cab.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><strong><span class=\"style34\">Lights and Reflectors<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style33\">. Reflectors should be clean and the proper color (red at rear). Verify that the following lights are clean, operating, and the proper color:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Headlights (high and low beams)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Turn signals<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Brake lights<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Running lights<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Emergency flashers<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\"><span class=\"style36\">NOTE: <\/span>All corresponding dash display lights should be checked also.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style38\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span class=\"style35\">Get in Vehicle<\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Turn off lights not needed for driving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Check for all required papers, trip manifests, permits, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Secure all loose articles in cab that might interfere with operation of the controls or hit you in a crash<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style32\"><span class=\"style33\">Start the engine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style39\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Check the Brake System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style38\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span class=\"style35\">Test Hydraulic Brakes. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style21\">\u00a0If the vehicle has hydraulic brakes, pump the brake pedal three times.\u00a0 Then apply firm pressure to the pedal and hold for five seconds.\u00a0 The pedal should not move.\u00a0 If it does, there may be a leak or other problem which must be repaired before driving.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Palomar College Fleet Vehicles are maintained and serviced by the College on a regular basis and in accordance with the manufacturer\u2019s specification; however problems may arise while in use.\u00a0&hellip; <a class=\"continue\" href=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/transportation-maintenance-and-mechanical\/\">Continue Reading<span> Transportation &#8211; Maintenance and Mechanical<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":455,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-700","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/P6SoZz-bi","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/700","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/455"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=700"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/700\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1075,"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/700\/revisions\/1075"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=700"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
