{"id":138,"date":"2015-08-26T18:08:32","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T18:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/?page_id=138"},"modified":"2025-03-18T11:29:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T18:29:11","slug":"plumbing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/facilities\/plumbing\/","title":{"rendered":"Plumbing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Our Maintenance Plumbers are responsible for the maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and piping systems.\u00a0 Services are available as regular or specially requested jobs\/projects.\u00a0 Emergency needs are addressed immediately as they become known.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style37\" style=\"text-align: justify\">The following are examples of services provided by the Maintenance Plumbers that are generally <i>not chargeable<\/i>to the requesting department:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style29\">Odd odors<\/span><span class=\"style17\">.\u00a0 Identify the odor if possible and report it immediately to the Facilities Office at extension 2629.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">Maintain and repair boilers, campus water fountains, grease traps, ice machines, garbage disposals and water heaters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">Repair and replace underground water and sewer lines; sewage and storm water pumps<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">Routine preventative maintenance of showers, eyewashes, and domestic hot water circulators<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">They provide standard repairs for toilets, urinals and sinks<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">Unclog drains and repair leaks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Services that are usually charged to the requesting department include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">Plumbing associated with remodeling or renovations<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">Performing minor construction<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style22\"><span class=\"style17\">Installing departmental equipment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style36\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Please do not contact our Maintenance Plumbers directly:\u00a0 Questions, please contact the Facilities Office at extension 2629, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li class=\"style37\"><span class=\"style23\"><span class=\"style27\">To request new work,\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span><span class=\"style23\">this is a chargeable service) and\/or repairs,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"style28\">\u00a0please submit your work order via email to\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:FacilitiesRemedy@palomar.edu\">Facilities Remedy.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"style37\"><span class=\"style27\"><span class=\"style23\">If this is an emergency, please contact the Facilities Office, at extension 2629, immediately.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style34\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><u><span class=\"style24\"><strong>Nature of Work\/Plumbing<\/strong><\/span><\/u><span class=\"style33\"><strong>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Plumbers install, maintain, and repair many different types of pipe systems.\u00a0 Some of these systems move water from reservoirs to municipal water treatment plants and then to residential, commercial, and public builders.\u00a0 Other systems dispose of waste, supply gas to stoves and furnaces, or provide for heating and cooling needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Plumbers install and repair the water, waste disposal, drainage, and gas systems in homes and commercial and industrial buildings.\u00a0 Plumbers also install plumbing fixtures\u2014bathtubs, showers, sinks and toilets\u2014and appliances such as dishwashers, waste disposers, and water heaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Plumbers use many different materials and construction techniques, depending on the type of project.\u00a0 Plumbers must be able to follow building plans or blueprints and instructions from supervisors, lay out the job, and work efficiently with the materials and tools of their trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Plumbers have become more involved in the design process.\u00a0 Their knowledge of codes and the operation of plumbing systems can cut costs.\u00a0 First, they lay out the job to fit the piping into the structure with the least waste of material.\u00a0 Then they measure and mark areas in which pipes will be installed and connected.\u00a0 Construction plumbers also check for obstructions such as electrical wiring and, if necessary, plan the pipe installation about the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Sometimes, plumbers have to cut holes in walls, ceilings and floors.\u00a0 With some systems, they hang steel supports from ceiling joists to hold the pipe in place.\u00a0 To assemble a system, plumbers\u2014using saws, pipe cutters, and pipe-bending machines\u2014cut and bend lengths of pipe.\u00a0 They connect the lengths of pipe with fittings, using methods that depend on the type of pipe used.\u00a0 For plastic pipe, plumbers connect the sections and fittings with adhesives.\u00a0 For copper pipe, they slide a fitting over the end of the pipe and solder it in place with a torch.<\/p>\n<div class=\"style35\" style=\"text-align: justify\">After the piping is in place, plumbers install the fixtures and appliances and connect the system to the outside water or sewer lines.\u00a0 Finally, using pressure gauges, they check the system to ensure that the plumbing works properly.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Maintenance Plumbers are responsible for the maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and piping systems.\u00a0 Services are available as regular or specially requested jobs\/projects.\u00a0 Emergency needs are addressed immediately&hellip;
