Mission Statement
The Grounds Department is responsible for the maintenance of safe and comforting landscape areas on Campus including; The Arboretum, The Cactus Garden and the Athletic Fields. The unique collection of plants creates an aesthetically pleasing and educational environment for all who visit the campus.
The landscaping on Campus is collectively part of an “Active” Botanical Garden; which we refer to as the “Gardens at Palomar”. Many of the specimens on campus are endangered or threatened with extinction in their natural habitat. The collection includes California Natives as well as specimens native to regions all over the world.
In our efforts to beautify the campus, we strive to be good stewards of our environment, by utilizing landscape material that requires minimal chemicals, is drought tolerant and by planting species that are noninvasive.
Some key points for enjoying the “Gardens at Palomar”
1.) Please do not pick and/or eat any fruits, berries, seeds, cuttings, etcetera from any of the plants on campus. What may look edible may in fact cause serious bodily injury and death. Should you or someone wish to collect any plant material they must receive and possess prior written permission from the District Grounds Department at 760-744-1150 x2133.
2.) Please stay on walking paths. Do not cut corners or walk through planter beds to avoid foot traffic, or to attempt to gain quicker access to a specific area. This may expose you to unwanted harm or may damage sensitive plant material.
3.) If you need access to, or through a planter bed to conduct an assigned task, be sure to check with the Grounds Services Supervisor prior to beginning the task, especially if you are not sure of the safety concerns.
4.) Should you need to work in a planter bed, tread lightly! Remember, one of the reasons the Flora on Campus is so unique is because many of the specimens are rare or endangered in the wild.

The Palomar College Recycling Program is dedicated to making recycling as easy and convenient as possible for the campus community. By recycling we can protect our planet’s natural resources, improve our health and wellbeing, and even help to stimulate the economy by creating jobs. Our vision is to turn Palomar College into a zero waste campus. Zero waste means eliminating materials used on our campus that end up in the garbage and diverting our “waste” stream into the recycling bin and into products that can be used again and again. We are working toward this goal by implementing the 4 R’s—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot.
All requests for services, including recycling, are requested through the Facilities Office.
