The residence determination date is the day before classes begin. The one year period begins when you are not only present in California but also have demonstrated clear intent to become a permanent resident of California.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\"><b>Intent to make California your permanent place of residence<\/b>. A person can only have one permanent place of residence at any given time. Some examples of demonstrated residence are:<\/span>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">\u00a0Living in California for two consecutive years<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">Owning residential property<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/registertovote.ca.gov\/\">Registering to vote<\/a> and voting in California<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">Obtaining a license from California for professional practice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">Holding active membership in service or social clubs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">Showing California address on federal tax returns<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">Having spouse, children or other close relative reside in California<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\"> paying California state tax as resident<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\"> possessing California driver&#8217;s license<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\"> possessing California motor vehicle license plates<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">maintaining California as legal state on Leave and Earnings Statement and W-2 Form while in the armed forces <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">establishing and maintaining active California bank accounts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">being a petitioner for divorce in California<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">\u00a0Examples of conduct inconsistent with a claim of California residency:<\/span>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">maintaining voter registration in another state<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">being a petitioner for divorce in another state<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">attending an out-of-state institution as a resident of that state<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">declaring non-residency for state income tax purposes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">maintaining a driver&#8217;s license and\/or vehicle registration in another state<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Residence Determination Factors: Physical presence in California one year prior to the residency determination date.
