{"id":22,"date":"2016-08-01T11:15:27","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T18:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/english\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2026-05-07T09:48:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T16:48:40","slug":"assessment-placement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/english\/assessment-placement\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessment &amp; Placement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">How to Find Your English &amp; Math Placement<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need help finding your English and\/or Math placement, please take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nTp7szErjFw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Recommended English Courses<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your success in our English classes is our ultimate goal!&nbsp; Most incoming Palomar College students are placed into English C1000\/Academic Reading &amp; Writing, which is our transfer-level composition course.&nbsp; English C1000 offers instruction in writing college-level essays, using MLA format, and doing research.&nbsp; Taking this class during your first year at Palomar will ensure you do well in all of your college classes since most of them require essay-writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel like you need extra practice with your writing and grammar skills, our English C1000E\/Academic Reading &amp; Writing Enhanced will set you up for success!&nbsp; This  course satisfies the same requirements as English C1000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>English C1001\/Critical Thinking and Writing or English C1003\/Critical Thinking and Writing through Literature\u00a0is taken after you complete English C1000 or C1000E, and they offer instruction in writing longer, more analytical essays.\u00a0C1001 focuses on reading non-fiction texts, whereas C1003 focuses on reading literature and fiction.\u00a0 If you have passed the Advanced Placement (AP) exam, then you can start in either English C1001 or English C1003 (and not start in English C1000 or C1000E).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your first language is not English, you may want to start with ESL classes.&nbsp; ESL classes provide cultural knowledge and language skills to be successful in college and society.&nbsp; Palomar College offers high-level ESL classes that can transfer to CSU and UC for general education units.&nbsp; Please contact us for help deciding whether ESL or English classes are the best fit for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Recommended Classes Based on Placement<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If your recommended placement in eServices is English C1000<\/strong>, you should register for our 4-unit college-level (transferable) English C1000 course in Academic Reading &amp; Writing. Be prepared to work hard and participate fully in this learning opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If your recommended placement in eServices is English C1000E, <\/strong>you should register for our 5-unit college-level (transferable) English C1000E course in Academic Reding &amp; Writing Enhanced. &nbsp;<em>Passing these courses will satisfy the ENG C1000 requirement.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If your recommended placement in eServices is English C1001 or English C1003<\/strong>, then you\u2019re ready for Advanced Composition and Critical Thinking, and you\u2019re probably planning to transfer! Check with your target university for guidance because some prefer one of these courses over the other.
