{"id":2010,"date":"2020-05-21T14:46:27","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T21:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/csit\/?page_id=2010"},"modified":"2020-05-21T14:46:27","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T21:46:27","slug":"copy-of-zoom-security-for-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/csit\/copy-of-zoom-security-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Copy of  Zoom Security for Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>QuickStart Guide for Students: Zoom Security and Privacy Concerns<\/h3>\n<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">You may have some privacy concerns with respect to the manner in which some of the lectures are carried out on Zoom.\u00a0 The information provided below should help you understand how to protect your privacy and maintain secure Zoom sessions for yourself.<\/p>\n<h4>Key things you will need to do to enter a Zoom session (from outside Canvas)<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NOTE<\/strong>:\u00a0 You\u00a0<strong>do not<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>need a Zoom account<\/strong>\u00a0to join a Zoom meeting!<\/li>\n<li>Use an instructor provided <strong>password<\/strong> to enter your Zoom meeting<\/li>\n<li>Enter your<strong> real name<\/strong> and <strong>Palomar Email address<\/strong> when asked to enter a Zoom meeting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wait in the electronic waiting room<\/strong> for the instructor\u00a0to admit you to the class session<br \/>\n(Your instructor\u00a0<strong>may not admit you<\/strong>\u00a0the class Zoom meeting if they\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t recognize your name<\/strong>\u00a0as being on their roster!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>During<\/strong> your Zoom Sessions <strong>you<\/strong>\u00a0&#8230;<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Must not be disruptive<\/strong>\u00a0in any way to the class session.\u00a0 Palomar College\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/studentlifeandleadership\/home\/student-discipline\/\">Student Code of Conduct<\/a><\/strong> is in force in the online and remote instruction environment as well.<\/li>\n<li>Are allowed to use the feature in Zoom that sets a background image to be applied (like a green screen) to help obscure the room and any personal areas that a student may not want visible to anyone.\u00a0 You may not\u00a0choose a background image that would be considered offensive or distracting.<\/li>\n<li>Are responsible for ensuring that any <strong>background video<\/strong>\u00a0you are using does not reveal offensive or distracting images.\u00a0 The same is true for any\u00a0<strong>image<\/strong>\u00a0of yourself that participants see when the\u00a0<strong>background video<\/strong>\u00a0is turned off.<\/li>\n<li>Will\u00a0<strong>warn any persons who may walk into the background<\/strong>\u00a0to avoid doing so, if at all possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Video Considerations\u00a0 (Virtual Background)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that if your <strong>Video<\/strong> is turned on that you <strong>warn<\/strong> anyone that you live with to avoid walking into your video view by accident!<\/li>\n<li>Try to make your video background as reasonably neutral as it can be.\u00a0 Be aware of what that others are seeing the room<br \/>\nyou in.\u00a0 <strong>Remove anything from view that might be offensive or distracting to anyone.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You have the ability to <strong>choose a<\/strong> <strong>Virtual Background<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0This can be any image or video that you select as your<br \/>\nbackground or the students selects as theirs.<\/li>\n<li>Use some discretion!<\/li>\n<li>Be considerate of your fellow students and not post anything that may be offensive or distracting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To set a Virtual Background in your video feed, click on the up-arrow to the right of the &#8220;Start Video&#8221; button in the lower-left<br \/>\ncorner of a Zoom session you have started &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/teachanywhere\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/149\/2020\/04\/zoom_virtual1.jpg\" alt=\"Virtual 1\" width=\"434\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the &#8220;Choose Virtual Background&#8221; option from the menu, and you will see something like&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-714\" src=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/teachanywhere\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/149\/2020\/04\/zoom_virtual2.jpg\" alt=\"Virtual 2\" width=\"880\" height=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can see that after the &#8220;None&#8221; image, I have previously uploaded many images that I can use as Virtual Backgrounds.\u00a0 When you<br \/>\nfirst come here you will only see the &#8220;None&#8221; image.\u00a0 When you select &#8220;None&#8221;, that means there is no Virtual Background selected<br \/>\nand the other students <strong>will see whatever is behind you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For you to get images, you must <strong>click the Plus Sign Icon<\/strong> to the right of the words &#8220;Choose Virtual Image&#8221; and follow the<br \/>\ninstructions to upload an image or video.\u00a0 It is entirely up to you (or the student) to find images that you want to use.<\/p>\n<p>Please notice one other thing.. the &#8220;<strong>Mirror my video<\/strong>&#8221; option.\u00a0 \u00a0 You want that.<\/p>\n<p>If you hold up a piece of paper to your camera it will look backward to you&#8230; but it will look correct to anyone else who<br \/>\nis participating in the meeting!<\/p>\n<p>So leave that setting as it is.<\/p>\n<p>After I choose an image my video feed looks like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/teachanywhere\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/149\/2020\/04\/zoom_virtual3.jpg\" alt=\"virtual 3\" width=\"873\" height=\"662\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You may not always (or ever) &#8220;Start Video&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0It is good to upload a picture of yourself that the other participants in the meeting<br \/>\nwill see when your video is off.\u00a0 Makes it a bit more personal than just seeing your name.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a Zoom account (not required), you login\u00a0 and click on the <strong>Profile<\/strong> link.\u00a0 \u00a0You can then click on the <strong>Change<\/strong> link below the picture (or icon if you<br \/>\nhaven&#8217;t yet selected a picture) to navigate to a picture image on your hard drive and select it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/teachanywhere\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/149\/2020\/04\/zoom_profile.jpg\" alt=\"profile\" width=\"861\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QuickStart Guide for Students: Zoom Security and Privacy Concerns You may have some privacy concerns with respect to the manner in which some of the lectures are carried out on Zoom.\u00a0 The information provided below should help you understand how to protect your privacy and maintain secure Zoom sessions for yourself.
