- Scenes from Highway 15
By Samantha Hatheway
Driving down the freeway at 65 mph.
Her radio, it breaks
No entertainment and a mind gone astray,
Images begging to flood and invade.
Images of the beaded bracelets she used to wear,
Long flowing hair displaying a purple hair wrap with bells that
would jingle every time she moved,
The sound that occurs when rain turns into snow,
Late nights turning into early mornings,
Hot summer nights & friends telling stories around campfires
Passing between them, projections and interjections on
The state of the world.
Caught in time, the story of her life.
Picturing her changing mind and physique—
She remembers the flash & knew that moment
Was forever captured in time.
So many moves and seasons of life.
She used to paint rainbows on her wall,
Once painted her room blue for the sake of something to do on a
hot dry summer night. Wanting only a reason to stay up late &
listen to the chirping of the crickets.
The tears come &
The lights from passing cars blur,
Forming one blinding light that she can’t ignore.
Everyone had gone and left her alone.
Alone with her thoughts & memories & 85 miles to go and no
radio.
No – flying through time at 65 mph.
No, she will not let her life become sterile blend of monotony.
She takes her shoes off – carefully still managing to drive.
Foot off the clutch, shoe off. Extra gas for speed, foot off
Gas, shoe off. Done. Now she is free.
