SUMMARY:The Strange and Wonderful Life of Figs
DESCRIPTION:Free to the Public\nSponsored by the Friends of the Edwin & Frances Arboretum at Palomar College  \nSaturday September 13th at 9am-11:30am. \nLecture by Wayne Armstrong\, Palomar College Professor Emeritus of Biology & Botany. Lecture will be for 1.5 hours\, the walk through the campus gardens will be for 1 hr. This talk/walk will focus on fig diversity across the globe. \nPalomar College – San Marcos Campus\n1140 W Mission Road\, San Marcos\, CA 92069\nNatural Sciences Building\, Room NS-139 \n(Please RSVP to Tony Rangel\, President of the Arboretum Committee: arangel@palomar.edu) \nParking will be free in lot 5 adjacent to the Arboretum across from the NS building. \nWith at least 850 different species many figs are the keynote species in their habitats. Towering high above the forest floor and in some cases a single tree can grow to cover acres of land. The forms of wildlife that depend on these trees in habitat are equally as diverse. We’ll also discuss the amazingly intricate relationship between figs\, their pollinators and the predators that feed on the pollinators. At the conclusion of the talk we’ll walk the campus gardens to see a few of the most unique and beautiful specimens in the collection. \nAttendees should bring water\, comfortable walking shoes\, and a hat or sunscreen for the walking portion. Optional: Bring a snack
