SUMMARY:Palm Trees and the Southern California Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Palm trees are often considered among earths most majestic plants and are popular landscape specimens wherever they may grow. Unfortunately\, the threats to earths diverse palm species are increasing every year\, both in the wild and in cultivation. Simultaneously\, for varied reasons\, the use of palm trees in the landscape has become an increasingly hot debate topic in the Desert Southwest and across the globe in the last 20 years. \nDuring our walk we will discuss why the debate mentioned above continues. We’ll touch on cultivation requirements and review some increasingly common questions like the ones below. \n\nWhat roles do palms play in the environment?\nWhat are some threats to palms in the wild?\nAre Palm Trees still a viable choice for Southern California Landscapes?\nIf so\, which species are the best choice?\nWhen and where should we plant them?\n\nWe’ll\, meet at LRC south. The walk will be about 2.5 hours throughout the campus\, stopping to discuss some of the more unique palms in the campus collection. \nMeeting location: LRC south front entrance. \n9am-11:30pm. \nParking in Lot 12 \nThe walk will be approximately 2.5 miles through the campus. \n  \nAttendees should wear comfortable walking shoes. Depending on weather\, a hat and/or warm clothes may be beneficial. Drinking water is also recommended.\nPlease RSVP to Tony Rangel at arangel@palomar.edu if interested
