Palomar College (PC) offers intense academic support services to higher risk,
disadvantaged students through a currently successful Upward Bound (UB) project.  The PC UB project will continue to serve 50 high school students in the target area of North County.  The UB project proposes to continue service to five critical target high schools:  Mission Hills, Vista, San Marcos, Oceanside, and Orange Glen; all include a high percentage of low-income, firstgeneration, academically at-risk, and ethnically diverse students.

North County lies in the heart of a region plagued by many gaping pockets of poverty and educational systems that are not expanding as rapidly as the diverse student populations.  This particular area is characterized by an excessively high number of families living in extreme poverty and a large diversity of students in multi-track, year-round, overcrowded schools.

Palomar College is located, inland, in the city of San Marcos, 50 miles north of San

The PC UB staff, students, and parents tackle the obstacles UB students face as they pursue high school success and formulate ideas about future educational/college plans and career options.  The UB student educational needs assessments, individual and small group counseling sessions, academic and summer components with unique curriculum, technology-based, interactive and engaging learning activities, cultural awareness projects/trips, field trips, college visits, family/home visits, parent workshops, tutoring/mentoring services, test preparation programs, and college enrollment advising lead to successful outcomes for all students served by PC UB.  The UB staff continue to use effective and efficient computer-based methods for tracking and monitoring student participation and completion through college.  The partners, within Palomar College, the North County community, and in the schools help make the PC UB project the success that is and needs to continue to be for the target area youth.
