UPWARD BOUND NEWSLETTER fall 2009

Nicole Pablo

My long lost UB kiddos! I’m so glad to hear from Nellie that you have not forgotten about me
because I haven’t forgotten about you all!  I was actually looking at old SRC pictures just yesterday! You’re all in my thoughts regularly and everything that I am learning back in school to assist in student success, I   immediately think about how we can utilize it so that you can get the information.

Nicole Pablo's corner

As many of you guys know, I’m still at San Diego State University chasing that Master’s in School Counseling and that’s why you haven’t seen me as often this and last semester.  While you are at UB Saturdays, I too am at school at the exact same time, getting as much as I can from my education. I have a lot more similarities with you than you even know! So, real talk, from student to student, I just wanted to say that I am honestly using ALL of the study skills, advice, and tricks of the trade we always drill you with prioritize responsibilities as well as assignments, organization is key, study ahead of time, don’t cram, make flashcards and notes, get rest before a test, ask questions, put time & effort into your work—turn in your best quality, always re-read/check essays & test answers, do your best to pay attention in class, and always believe in yourself.

I always ask Nellie how you all are doing & am always crossing my fingers to hear nothing but good news.  I’ll be done with my Saturday classes very soon, so will see you again to help you succeed in person. Until then, do your best, show us what you’ve got, challenge & believe in yourselves! <3 Nicole

P.S. Dae dae says Hi & kick butt in school ;)

JDRF_Walk to Cure Diabetes

Upward Bound we are officially registered to have a team at the JDRF-Walk to Cure Diabetes! This is a great community service opportunity while giving back to some of our youngsters who suffer from such a horrible disease.  I invite all of you to register for the event. The walk is not strenuous, but a lot of fun! We can do it. All we have to do is set a personal fundraising goal and register on the website.  Parents, siblings, and students are encouraged to participate!

Go to: www.jdrf.org and in the GET INVOLVED section click on REGISTER.  Super easy and super fun!

A little bit about JDRF!

JDRF is the leader in research leading to a cure for type 1 diabetes in the world.  It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide.
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal.  Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives.  And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.
