Message from the TRiO/SSS Director: Calvin One Deer Gavin

Welcome all new and continuing TRiO/SSS program participants. I hope that you have had a productive and relaxing summer, and that by now your mind and body are ready to begin the journey of another successful college semester. There are many academic challenges, school deadlines and life-changing situations you all will most likely encounter in the next academic year. The TRiO/SSS program and the staff are here to guide you through this academic adventure. The Palomar Col-lege TRiO/SSS services and resources will help all of you achieve academic and personal success. Your participation in the program and your own initiative will help you start and finish with success!
Make sure this year is your best academic year ever! Many will use the same tactics in order to solve study/school challenges. Others will simply ignore the problem and hope for the issue to disappear. However, once the problem does not vanish life be-comes harder. In order to make life easier individuals should work smarter and hard-er. For example, if you have an exam in the upcoming week, but you also have a full work schedule ahead, manage your time efficiently. Study on your free time; whether it is 30 minutes on your lunch break or 1 hour before you go to bed. This tactic will help you manage your personal life and academic life in a smarter way. Do not wait until the last day before the exam, to cram all the information for the test. This method will ensure you are working harder, and become smarter!
It is also important to note that when life becomes challenging it is vital to have peers, mentors, counselors or family members who are there to support you. Talking to someone about life's challenges can alleviate the stress and your support group can also provide new methods, strategies or tactics you can use to overcome life's problems. The same can be said for your college difficulties. If you are having trou-ble in a particular class, transferring or assignment grades, it is important to talk to the TRiO/SSS counselors and coordinators. The program staff is always available to help you with any issues you are encountering. The more you use the personnel and the resources available, the better chances you have of achieving academic and per-sonal success. The TRiO/SSS program offers many resources for our students, but it is up to you to take advantage of our services. Remember that the TRiO/SSS office is a great door for successful opportunities; it is up to you to walk through it (early and often).
Lastly, I want to wish you a successful fall semester and I would like to remind you that our services are aimed at helping you achieve academic excellence and to trans-fer to a four year university. So, let's stay connected on your path of academic pur-suits!
