Computerized Graphic Design (R GC) (Click for more information)

Students who enroll for college credit and achieve a minimum grade of “C” in each of the required ROP and College courses may apply for a Palomar College Certificate of Proficiency or Achievement in various areas of Graphic Communications. ROP courses that may qualify include RGC 140, 149, 150, 152, 153, 197, 200, 202, 203. Completion of additional requirements in general education and elective courses qualifies students to apply for an Associate of Arts in Graphic Communications.

140 Digital Imaging/Photoshop I (3 units)

The study of digital imaging and editing with Adobe Photoshop for visual, pictorial and graphic use in all media.  Emphasis on creating and enhancing imagery for effective use in mass communication mediums.

149 Page Layout & Design I (3 units)

Introduction to electronic document design and page layout, electronic composition, text and graphics entry with computers.  Students will create a variety of projects including but not limited to:  brochures, flyers, and newsletters.
   May be taken four times.

152 Desktop Publishing with Illustrator (3 units)

Introduction to electronic layout on the microcomputer. Illustrator will help the student generate new images or convert bitmapped images into PostScript. Quality levels needed for electronic output will be evaluated. May be taken four times.

160 Desktop Publishing/Adobe InDesign (3 units)

Introduction to electronic document design and layout, electronic composition, text and graphics entry with microcomputers. Adobe InDesign will be used to create more effective visual communications. Quality levels needed for electronic output will be evaluated. May be taken four times.

202 Web Page Layout I (3 units)

Recommended Preparation: R GC 140 or experience with Illustration and layout software programs.
A hands-on introduction to page layout for the Internet. Typographic considerations, screen layout, graphical interfaces, and structured page design for effective Internet communications. May be taken four times.

260  Portfolio Development and Presentation (3 units)

Students will develop a personal portfolio to showcase their graphics skills and techniques. Various resources, including the Internet, will be used to conduct a job search, develop a resume and learn interviewing techniques. Guest speakers will share industry tips. Students will practice presentation and interviewing skills, with feedback from professionals working in graphics and related industries. Note: Generally offered spring semester.
