Computer Technology (R CSIS)

Students who enroll for college credit and achieve a minimum grade of “C”in each of the required courses may apply for a Palomar College Certificate of Proficiency. Certificates include: Computer Technology-Repair and Maintenance (RCSIS 51, 55, 56 and 57); PC Support Technician (RCSIS 51 and 55); and PC Repair Technician (RCSIS 56, 159 and 172). ROP courses taken for college credit may also apply to other certificates or degrees available through the College.

140 Command Line Operations (3 units)
Hands-on approach to the basic principles of command line operations, using DOS (disk operating system) as a foundation. Includes major utility programs used for data and task management.

155 Computer Technology - Hardware (3 units)


Prerequisite: R CSIS 140

Introduction to the basic principles of computer hardware, architecture and design. Hands-on experience necessary to design a microcomputer and provide technical support for microcomputer systems.  Prepare for A+ Core exam.

156 Computer Technology - Software (3 units)

Prerequisite: R CSIS 140
Fundamentals of microcomputer operating systems and Local Area Networks (LAN).  Hands-on approach to installing, troubleshooting and supporting PC operating systems, networking fundamentals, and preparation for the A+ OS certification exam.

160 Introduction to Local Area Networking (3 units)

Prerequisite: R CSIS 156 & R CSIS 156

Basic principles of Local Area Networking (LAN) structure and function.  Hands-on experience in design, construction, installation, maintenance and repair to the modular level using operating systems and diagnostic hardware and software.

157 Windows XP:  Professional and Server (3 units)

Recommended Prerequisite: R CSIS 170

A focused study of Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Server operating systems.  Includes hands-on experience installing, configuring, optimizing, maintaining and troubleshooting Windows XP Professional on stand-alone and client computers in workgroup or domain environment.  Study of Windows.NET Server includes setup and configuration of Active Directory Service.

158 Windows 2000 (3 units)

Recommended Prerequisite: R CSIS 170

Core knowledge and skills for supporting Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. Includes installing, configuring, customizing, optimizing, networking, integrating, and troubleshooting.  May be taken two times.

159 Industry Certification: Review and Preparation (1 unit)

Recommended Prerequisite: Completion of Computer Repair sequence.
A focused study of industry and professional certifications available for PC technicians. Review of Microsoft, Novell, and CTIA certification programs. Content review, preparation, and practice for A+ Certification Examination. May be taken two times.

172 Windows for Technicians (1 unit)

A technical study of Windows operating system; hand-on experience installing, configuring, optimizing, maintaining and troubleshooting. May be taken two times.
