1. Study Reading / SQ3R
2. Learning Styles
3. Taking Notes – From Lecture and Reading
4. Time Management
5. Test Taking/Preparation
6. Communication
Gather Information:
Begin research for your presentation and paper
with online research (consult several of the
Study Skills Online Resources and the
Readers’ Resources I have published for
you on
Thomson’s Web (http://www.palomar.edu/reading/Thomsons%20Web/index.htm)).
You may want to conduct your own online research
by using a search engine such as Google. You’ll
find a great collection of links to help with
college learning, study skills, concentration,
memory, and more!
You may also use information found in your text,
any courses you may have taken on study skills,
and your own experience as a successful student
to prepare a presentation for your group. You
may wish to visit the library (Palomar
College/Learning Resource Center or Public) and
check out videos on your topic.
Procedure:
1. Read the information you have found on your study skill and prepare your paper - an outline/summary of the major ideas presented.
2. Prepare a brief (about 5-10 minutes) presentation for your group. Make sure you have a thorough understanding of the author’s message and that you will be able to explain and illustrate that message to your group. Remember, you are the teacher! Your goal is to impart the information in the most interesting and yet thorough manner. You may prepare handouts, give a lecture, have examples and illustrations, and/or have your students do a brief assignment.
3. Meet with classmates from other groups who have chosen to present on the same topic. Brainstorm; share ideas and resources. Class time will be provided for this meeting.
4. Make your presentation to your group and submit your paper (see #1 above) on .
Evaluation:
Your score will be based on
Quality of paper (clarity, accuracy, thoroughness) 50 points
Presentation (organized, informative, engaging) 50 points
Extra Credit Opportunity:
After you have presented and listened to your fellow group members, some students may be given the opportunity to present to the entire class (for extra credit). Encourage group members who gave excellent presentations to share with the rest of the class.
