Vocab Module 4 - Vocabulary Enhancement

Learning Objectives: When you finish Vocab Mod 4 you should be able to answer the following questions:

Have I really moved the vocabulary studied in 1100 Words, Weeks 9-10 into my utilitarian vocabulary?

Am I ready for Vocabulary Quiz #4?

Have I really moved the vocabulary studied in 1100 Words, Weeks 9-10 into my utilitarian vocabulary?

Remember as you create your study lists, vocabulary journals, columns, or cards, consult a good dictionary for a complete definition. The one-word synonyms found in 1100 Words are fine for matching practice, but may lead you astray when you are actually attempting to use these words correctly in speech or writing.

Click here to view the Study Guide for 1100 Words weeks 9 through 10. This list will help you to assess your progress prior to attempting the practice writing  - Vocab Activity 4.

Vocabulary Practice Writing - Activity 4 - Optional Extra Credit

Writing in which you actually use the words you are attempting to master requires that you have full conceptual knowledge of each word. Test your knowledge of the words we have studied in weeks 1-10 by attempting a short story or essay on a topic of your choice in which you incorporate as many of those vocabulary words as you can; try to use at least 10 of the words. You will receive 20 extra credit points for a brief essay or short story using 10 vocabulary words.

If, however, you would like to earn more extra credit, you may write a longer piece using as many 1100 Words vocab words as you like. You will earn 2 points for each word you use correctly. Please count the number of vocab words you use and and write that number in parentheses at the bottom of your posting. See our discussion board for examples.

If you like, you may do more collaborative writing like the writing roulette you posted for the last vocab module. If you are writing an opening paragraph and inviting classmates to contribute to your essay or story, put an indicator ("WR" for writing roulette) in the subject line (title) of your posting.

As an example, here is an introduction to Critical Reading - Detecting Propaganda written especially for you and including many vocabulary words from weeks 9-10:

Because your vocabulary quiz is imminent and as an additional review for you, I will interject relevant vocabulary into this introduction to our consideration of propaganda. Do not remain inert; carefully peruse  this document looking for vocabulary usage tips as well salient points regarding propaganda.

An important tool for critical, analytical reading is the ability to detect propaganda. Sometimes propaganda may be so flagrant, so blatant, so irritating and obvious, that we wonder who the author was attempting to fool. But at other times very subtle propaganda techniques may be employed so that only the most careful, aware, and astute observer may notice.

Sometimes, especially in the hands of a bigot with unreasonable and blatantly expressed, biased views, propaganda may take on a virulent, pernicious tone and perhaps be used as a means to nefarious ends. At other times, for example, in the advertising industry, propaganda may be deemed merely vexatious or even only mildly irritating.

As in the example above, underline the words as you use them; when your essay or story is complete, count the total number of vocabulary words and write that number in parentheses at the bottom of your posting. Post your completed essay or story to our online discussion board for extra credit.

Am I ready for Vocab Quiz #4?

Now that you have prepared and studied your self-selected list of recognition and unknown vocabulary and reviewed using the class study guide list, you should be ready to take the quiz. This quiz will follow the format of all vocabulary quizzes for Read 110:

  • Ten words from the announced weeks (9 words from the study guide list and 1 "mystery word" that will separate the "A" students from the "A+" students)
  • The quiz will be similar to the practice quiz in DRV on pages 22-23. For each word, be prepared to write:
    • A complete definition, not a vague, one-word synonym
    • A sentence using the word. Your sentences should clearly demonstrate that you understand the word's meaning and how to use it correctly in a sentence.
  • A bonus opportunity
  • For this quiz the bonus will test your facility with analogies using the vocabulary words studied thus far. On the quiz, you will not be required to complete the analogies with vocabulary words, but you will not be able to complete the analogies correctly without a solid understanding of the vocabulary we have studied.
  • The following abbreviations have been used on the bonus section of the quiz:
    • : = is to
    • :: = as
    • "disdain : respect :: scoff : __________" reads "disdain is to respect as scoff is to __________"
  • Examples:  In order to test yourself, look at the first pair of words in each analogy. They will be related either as synonyms or antonyms. When you have decided upon the relationship, look at the third word and then fill in the blank to complete the analogy so that the second pair of words is related in the same way as the first pair.
    • implacable : unforgiving :: reprehensible :  __________
    • nefarious : kind hearted :: amicable : __________
    • exacerbate : ease :: revert : __________
    • eschew : avoid :: masticate : __________
    • discern : overlook :: deride : __________
    • indigent : affluent :: cognizant : __________
    • pertinent : unimportant :: doleful : __________
    • blatant: showy :: virulent : __________

Unlike the Concept Quick Quizzes, you will not be allowed to use notes when you come in to lab to take vocabulary quizzes.

You will be notified via email when Vocabulary Quiz #4 will be available in lab for you to complete.
