Activity 1 - Vocabulary Practice Quiz #1
For
each of the words below, write a complete definition and a
sentence using the word. Please underline the vocabulary word in
your sentence. Be sure your sentence is rich with context clues
that will demonstrate your precise knowledge of the word's
meaning and how the word is correctly used.
When
you have completed your quiz, use your 1100 Words text,
dictionary, and other sources to grade the quiz. Give yourself 5
points for each correct definition and 5 points for each
sentence. If your sentence does not demonstrate your precise
knowledge of the word's meaning and how the word is correctly
used do not give yourself credit. For example:
Incorrect:
Bob's remarks were caustic.
Although
the word is used correctly, you have not shown that you know the
meaning of the word.
Correct:
Bob's
sarcastic remarks were perhaps too caustic; Sally was
reduced to tears.
Incorrect:
Bob might euphemism in order to avoid offending
his more sensitive listeners.
This
word is not used correctly; the word is a noun, but has been
used like a verb in the incorrect sentence.
Correct:
Bob
might use the euphemism "vertically challenged"
in order to avoid offending the shorter women while discussing
their chances of making the basketball team.
You
may the change the word to a different part of speech by
altering suffixes if you wish.
Correct:
Bob
euphemistically referred to the shorter women as
"vertically challenged" in order to avoid offending
anyone while discussing their chances of making the basketball
team.
