Summary of Progress-to-Date |
|
March 10th, 2009 Things are moving along quickly now on this project. At today's meeting we worked out some of the details related to air conditioning, lighting, and telescope storage. Jeff Bowen attended this meeting and we spent time discussing some of the details related to the layout of the console area, the lighting inside of the planetarium and some additional features such as a public address system. There are many detailed items that are still in need of working out but this project is heading towards completion of the design phase. We are on budget and on track for submission to DSA in late April. Governing Board approval will come soon and after approval, I will be able to fill this website with all of the cool floorplans and 3D renderings! At the next meeting we will be looking at design elements such as flooring materials, fabrics, carpet designs and colors. Should be fun! |

March 31st, 2009 This was a productive meeting today. We met with the HVAC engineers and discussed the final details of the heating and cooling systems for the planetarium. Specific details about cooling schedules and zones were worked out along with some of the hardware choices for equipment that will be both efficient and quiet. We then met with the tBP consultant to work towards choosing color designs for carpets, tiles, wall coverings, casework coverings and more. We were shown some great choices and will re-visit this topic once the consultant has refined our specified desires down to a few specific color pallets. It is hard to believe that we have progressed far enough to be choosing carpet designs! I am getting more and more excited as this project heads towards construction. Stay tuned for pictures and schematics! |

May 6th, 2009 The architectural plans for the planetarium were submitted to the California Department of the State Architect (DSA) for approval. The Approval process takes several months (especially with the work slowdown due to the dire economic outlook here in California). The new planetarium design plans will be presented to the President of the College and the College Governing Board on July 14th. Once the Governing Board approves the plans, we will release design details, including diagrams, to the public. |

July 14th, 2009 The design team made the formal presentation to the Palomar College Board of Trustees at their July meeting. The presentation went well and we are awaiting an official approval from the Board. The tBP architects are waiting for final approval from the California Department of the State Architect (DSA). We suspect that this migh come in early Fall. Following the official approval from DSA the College will go out to bid on a contractor with the hope of construction beginning in early 2010. Things are slow right now as the project winds its way through the official process with the State. |
