I was first introduced to sign language and deafness when my son’s pediatrician told me that she thought he could be deaf. That was in 1994 and I am still learning. My school district, where we lived had a Total Communication philosophy, so we learned S.E.E. for those early years. After reading extensively on deaf and hard of hearing children and the other options for teaching them, I decided to take some ASL classes; that was in 1999. Since then, I received my certificate in ASL deaf studies and currently working on my general education for an AA degree.  I was hired as an Educational Interpreter in 2000 at an elementary school. My son graduated from the elementary school in which he started as a preschooler and is now attending a School for the Deaf, where we have become involved in that community.
