A partnership of
choreographers brings energy and elegance to the Howard Brubeck Theatre
stage for the Mostly Modern dance show on February 7 and 8. Presented by
the Palomar College Performing Arts Department, shows are at 8:00 p.m. on
Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Artistic Director of Mostly Modern is Molly Faulkner, assistant professor
and newest member of the dance faculty at Palomar College. Joining her as
choreographers in the show are three luminaries of modern dance in San
Diego: Jean Isaacs, Patricia Sandback, and Faith Jensen-Ismay.
In keeping with the
collaborative spirit of the show, the Palomar College Chamber Singers – a
28-voice ensemble directed by David Chase – open the program singing
Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi as dance students perform choreography set by
Faulkner and Jensen-Ismay. Considered a jewel of Baroque era music,
Vivaldi’s Gloria has a brisk vitality that is well-suited for dance
adaptation.
“Based on the traditional Latin Mass, Gloria is composed in a cantata
style in twelve movements of contrasting key, mood and instrumentation,”
Faulkner said. “Our dance reflects the music’s origins and uses themes of
joyous movement to compliment this magnificent score.”
Using another Baroque masterwork, J. S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio, Jean
Isaacs’s choreography features 14 dancers in a spirited and celebratory
piece. Isaacs is the Artistic Director of San Diego Dance Theatre and is a
member of the dance faculty at UCSD.
Times Gone By is a new work by Jensen-Ismay to the inspirational music of
Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer. Eight dancers perform the patterns as their
relationships change over time. Another O’Connor composition, In Full
Swing, is the music for Swing and Fling in which the dancers interact
using common daily gestures as the foundation for the work.
Jensen-Ismay utilizes mobility by wheels and by foot in a new quartet,
Movin’ On. One of the dancers is in a wheel chair while the others move to
and from a rolling chair on their journey of moving in the space together.
The spatial designs and patterns take on a different dimension with the
use of the constant motion of wheels.
