Not Thinking the World Apart:
Transforming the Power Dynamic & Living the Questions in the
Classroom
Code # 79
Recorded on
site at the 2006 Teaching Professor Conference in Nashville, TN,
this presentation by Michael Glaser looks at some of the
in-process techniques that one teacher is developing and
employing as he struggles with issues of power, passivity and
authenticity in the required general education courses he
teaches. Focus is given to such questions as: How can college
professors encourage students who are unpracticed in thinking,
questioning and risk taking to do so because they want to rather
than because the teacher can make them? How can educators
re-awaken the excitement and curiosity of the liberal arts as an
enjoyable, engaged, educational experience?

What
Motivates College Students to Cheat
Code # 81
Academic
cheating has been described as both epidemic and endemic. It is
considered a significant problem because it is occurring on all
college campuses with high frequency and because it undermines
the foundation of the college as a learning institution. A
review of the literature on cheating behaviors revealed
percentages of self-reported cheating ranging from 24% to 98%.
The present study explored the relationship between academic
dishonesty and student backgrounds, along with student
attitudes. This1998 was conducted by Jeff Walls and included
faculty and students.

Promoting
Effective Teaching Through Assessment
Code # 80
Faculty need
to be able to demonstrate that they are responsible in their
teaching, but they also need to continue to develop themselves
as teachers to meet the changing expectations of their
profession, society and students. Student ratings have always
been the most common type of evidence of teaching quality, but
it is often overused and misused.
In this
session, recorded on-site at the 2006 Teaching Professor
Conference in Nashville, TN, Larry Braskamp discusses the
changing expectations of faculty and how student ratings can be
better utilized to meet both the individual needs of the
professor and the needs of the institution to have trustworthy
evidence to make decisions about the faculty.

The Art of
Listening
Code # 105
The Art of
Listening teaches practical techniques to use immediately. It
presents listening as a skill your students can learn, practice,
and perfect. This engaging program uses home and workplace
situations to teach seven "Laws of Good Listening." The program
illustrates the surprising value of attentive silence, the need
to find something of interest in the person speaking, and the
importance of staying out of the speaker's way.
The
techniques suggest how and when to take notes, the role of body
language in listening, and the need to "listen between the
words" for feelings.
The program
explores how people use different “filtering systems” to give
the same message completely different meanings. Each "law” is a
key toward improved listening and communication.

turns in conversation, and saying "yes" or "no" complicate
