FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR PROGRAM INFORMATION

WESTERN HEMISPHERE FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AWARDS

  • The 23 countries of the Western Hemisphere program welcome applicants with established relationships with the host country as well as those with little to no prior experience in the country to which they are applying. CIES or the host country can often assist in finding local contacts.

  • For the 2003-04 competition all of the countries will accept applications in any discipline, under the ANY FIELD award category, which allows applicants to design their own projects and propose their own affiliation.  Most countries also offer field specific awards with designated host institutions ( e.g. Brazil # 3494 American Studies).  The best prospects for award are if you are a good match for a field specific award, as these awards attract fewer applicants than Any Field.

  • The majority of the awards are for a combination of research and teaching.  The teaching component normally consists of one course plus a short seminar, workshops, curriculum development or other program support work as requested by the host institution.  There is no minimum number of contact hours required and ample time is available for research.

  • The following countries offer full time research awards (in addition to full time teaching or any combination of the two):

Mexico

Ecuador

Uruguay
Canada

Paraguay

  • Grant lengths range from 2 to 9 months; the majority of awards are for 4-6 months. Countries offering longer awards are:

Mexico

El Salvador

Trinidad
Canada  Haiti  Venezuela
Barbados Jamaica
Chile  Panama

In addition, some countries will consider grants split across two consecutive years.

  • Grantees to Latin America must be able to work in a Spanish (or Portuguese) speaking environment; in many cases grantees must be prepared to teach in Spanish. For feasibility of English, contact CIES. If the applicant does not have at least a working knowledge of Spanish or need Spanish to undertake the project (as is sometimes the case, depending on the project and discipline) justification should be provided in the project statement.

  • The level of competitiveness among countries varies greatly, and varies year by year.  In general the language requirements for Latin America appear to have a dampening effect on the number of applications vis a vis other world areas that do not require a second language.  Presently, those Western Hemisphere countries offering the best opportunities for award are:

Argentina

Ecuador

Paraguay
Canada   Peru  Guatemala
El Salvador Haiti
Colombia Nicaragua
Dominican Republic Panama
Mexico Honduras   Venezuela

Mexico offers excellent opportunities. It is among the largest of the Fulbright country programs, offering an average of 24 awards each year and is among the few countries offering full time research grants.

Chile offers new opportunities to scholars who may not have contacts in the country.  The Chilean Fulbright Commission is expanding its contacts and collaboration with universities throughout the country to attract more American scholars in all fields to strengthen doctoral education in Chile.

Argentina and Uruguay offer a joint award in environmental sciences

Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay offer a joint award in trade integration

Among the English-speaking countries Canada, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad/Tobago tend to be less competitive than Australia, New Zealand or the U.K.

  • The most requested fields in general are business/economics, environmental sciences/issues, law, American Studies, international relations and teaching English as a second language/applied linguistics.
