FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR PROGRAM INFORMATION

PROGRAMS IN EAST AND SOUTHEAST ASIA

Most programs built around awards in the social sciences and humanities for lecturing with some preferences for fields indicated; most countries also offer research awards

Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand have genuinely “Any Field” awards

China has Distinguished lectureships in American foreign policy, law, and economics/business

Philippines has short term (2-6 weeks) Distinguished Lectureships in American foreign policy, American economy and business practices in Natural and medical sciences are excluded from almost all programs with following exceptions—Australia, New Zealand, Thailand; also agricultural and related fields in the Philippines

Opportunities in the visual and performing arts in Australia, New Zealand, Korea, and Taiwan

China has the largest program with 25 awards in 2002-03 – 17 for lecturing and 8 for research; Japan next largest—15 awards--8 lecturing or l/r awards and  7 research awards; other countries around 6-9; Hong Kong 4 and Singapore 2.

  • Part of China research grants can be spent in HK or TW
