Palomar College Television wins national and international awards

SAN MARCOS (August 31, 2006) - Palomar College Television (PCTV) is getting noticed these days as awards for the station's productions are stacking up. The station recently announced winning awards in three distinguished competitions -- the international Aurora Awards and Telly Awards and the national Aegis Awards.

The PCTV production College Mathline Live Broadcast won Best of Show Platinum in the Aurora Awards and a Silver Award (top prize) in the Telly Awards, and was named as a finalist in the Aegis competition.

The college's production Aeronautical Sciences Promo won a Gold Award in the Aurora competition and a Silver Award in the Telly competition. Chemistry, The Universal Connection, won a Bronze Telly Award and was also a finalist in the Aegis competition.

The production From War to Peace and Beyond won the First Place prize in the Aegis Awards along with a Gold Aurora Award. Also winning First Place in the Aegis Awards was the production Contemporary Legal Issues: The Terri Schiavo Case.

Commented PCTV Producer Bill Wisneski, "These awards are a testament to the talent of the staff, students and instructors at Palomar College. We are especially proud this year since our Mathline show won the top prize from both the Aurora and Telly Awards. It's the first time in our department's history that we have won the top prize from both of these prestigious contests."

Mathline is a live tutoring program that is broadcast throughout the state on the California Community College Satellite Network. This semester's show will air Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. starting Sept. 27 on Adelphia channel 67 and Cox and Time Warner channel 16.

"We try to incorporate at least one 'real world' math application in every program to increase interest and let students see how math is actually used," Wisneski said. The station has estimated that the program reaches more than two million homes. He added, "We don't think there is anything else quite like it in the country - and we're planning to expand the program to some areas of Northern California as well."

Commenting on the two awards PCTV received for the video From War and Peace and Beyond, Wisneski explained that PCTV was commissioned by the Global Village Foundation to produce a 10-minute video about Le Ly Hayslip and the humanitarian foundations she created. "Le Ly was the focus of Oliver Stone's film Heaven & Earth, and is an award winning author. Her son graduated from Palomar's RTV program," Wisneski said.

The Aurora Awards is an international competition designed to recognize excellence in the film and video industries. This competition specifically targets programs and commercials that would not normally have the opportunity to compete on a national level, by focusing on non-national commercials, regional or special interest entertainment and corporate sponsored film and video.

Also an international competition, the Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. With a record 13,379 entries from all 50 states and around the world, this year's competition has been the most competitive and successful in the long history of the Telly Awards.

A national competition now in its 17th year, the Aegis Awards has become established as a leading competition for professional video and film makers. The stated mission of the Aegis Awards competition is to provide a forum to recognize the people and organizations responsible for developing some of the most effective video/film productions being produced today.
