SAN MARCOS (May 15, 2007) – Shows produced by Palomar College Television (PCTV) are developing a track record as award winners. For the second year in a row, the station has won awards in three distinguished competitions -- the international Aurora Awards and Telly Awards and the national AEGIS Awards.
The PCTV produced documentary From War to Peace and Beyond won Platinum Best of Show in the Aurora Awards, a Silver Award (top prize) in the Telly Awards, and was named as a winner in the AEGIS competition.
Contemporary Legal Issues: The Terri Schiavo Case also won Platinum Best of Show in the Aurora Awards and another Contemporary Legal Issues show, Identity Theft was named as a winner in the AEGIS Awards.
Winning a Gold Award in the Aurora Competition was The College Mathline.
The show Kodaly: Stepping Stones to Teaching Music was a finalist in the AEGIS Awards and won a Bronze Award in the Telly Award competition.
Commenting on the awards, PCTV Producer Bill Wisneski said, “Everyone involved with these productions put in a tremendous amount of work, so it’s very gratifying to earn these industry awards. Even more important, though, is the positive feedback we have received from students, faculty, staff, and the community about how these programs have benefited them personally.”
From War To Peace and Beyond is a 30-minute documentary that explores Le Ly Hayslip’s painful but ultimately triumphant journey from a tragic childhood in war-torn Vietnam to her new life as an American citizen and humanitarian. It is the story of one woman’s quest to heal the wounds of war and build a bridge between the East and West. Le Ly was the focus of Oliver Stone’s film Heaven & Earth, and she is an award winning author.
The telecourse Contemporary Legal Issues examines important topics of the day with a panel of experts from the legal arena. One program sought to illuminate the legal and ethical issues involved with the Terri Schiavo right-to-die case. Another program focused on issues involved with identity theft. The College Mathline is a live tutoring program that is broadcast throughout Southern California on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. “We try to incorporate at least one ‘real world’ math application in every program to increase interest and let students see practical use of math,” Wisneski said. “We estimate the program reaches more than two million homes.”
An in-depth study of the Kodaly approach to music education, Kodaly: Stepping Stones to Teaching Music, utilizes this Hungarian method, which places particular emphasis on philosophy and methodology. The series demonstrates how music instructors can use this in-depth and very effective technique for teaching music to K-12 students.
The Aurora Awards is an international competition designed to recognize excellence in the film and video industries. This competition specifically targets programs and commercials that would not normally have the opportunity to compete on a national level, by focusing on non-national commercials, regional or special interest entertainment and corporate sponsored film and video.
Also an international competition, the Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. With a record 13,379 entries from all 50 states and around the world, this year's competition has been the most competitive and successful in the long history of the Telly Awards.
A national competition now in its 17th year, the AEGIS Awards has become established as a leading competition for professional video and film makers. The stated mission of the AEGIS Awards competition is to provide a forum to recognize the people and organizations responsible for developing some of the most effective video/film productions today.
