Palomar College TV show Offers Solutions to Math Problems
SAN MARCOS (February 10, 2005) - Looking for solutions to your math problems? Palomar College's math and Educational Television (PCTV) departments are ready to help - with The College Mathline, a live hour-long television show. Starting February 23, the show features classroom instruction with the "Math Guy," Palomar Instructor Dan Clegg, along with one-on-one live phone tutoring provided by two tutors from the college's tutoring department. Dan Clegg started teaching at Palomar College in 1995 and has co-authored several college math textbooks.
According to Marlene de Leon of the PCTV department, "The College Mathline is a televised homework helpline for students who need help with beginning algebra, geometry, intermediate algebra, college algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. On the show, Clegg will work through specific math problems with students. The tutors will be available to answer calls during the show and answer all questions and emails received each week.
"The San Diego County Office of Education and Palomar College will broadcast the show on cable county-wide," de Leon said. "College students and community members who need help with a math problem are invited to call in."
The College Mathline will be televised Wednesday, 5-6pm beginning February 23 through May 11. The televised show will be broadcast on the following cable systems: Adelphia - Cha. 67; Coronado Shores - Ch. 46; Cox Cable North - Ch. 16; Cox Cable South - Chan. 16; Julian - Ch 4; and Time Warner - Ch. 16.
"More specific information will soon be available about each week's show on the website www. palomar.edu/PCTV," de Leon said, adding that each televised show will be archived for later viewing online.
Pat Schwerdtfeger, Dean, Arts, Media, Business & Computing Services said, " The College Mathline is an effort to use technology to provide another opportunity for students who are having trouble to get the help they need to be successful. College Mathline is building on the success of a similar effort in K-12. Considering the importance of mathematics to business and industry, the college hopes to find corporate and private underwriting to help offset the cost of the program and expand its reach throughout the San Diego community."
