Profile of the "Successful" Telecourse Student

While almost anyone can enroll in telecourses, it takes a special kind of person to succeed in this non-traditional learning process. Based on a recent survey of SPJC telecourse completers and non-completers, we learned that:

Successful telecourse students…..

Are self-motivated and can work independently.
Understand the difference between telecourse and classroom-based courses.
Make an informed decision to enroll in telecourses and register early for them.
Read the course syllabus completely before orientation.
Attend the required orientation session.
Schedule a specific time each week to view programs and read texts.
Make contact with local instructors, either by phone or in person, to discuss course assignments.
Complete assignments correctly and mail them on time.
Never miss telelesson broadcasts and often videotape programs for future viewing.
Take notes while viewing telelessons.
Attend and ask specific questions during the midterm and final review sessions.
Take advantage of available college support services.
Study from telelessons, study guides, and textbooks before taking exams.
Come prepared to take exams with scantrons, pencils, and photo identification.

In short, successful telecourse students have the ability to make an honest appraisal of their personal suitability for this mode of learning.
