Dr. Elton Homan (right) of  Cornell University and Palomar College  Professor Wayne Armstrong collecting leaves from the South American Ombu tree (Phytolacca dioica) in the college arboretum. Dr. Homan specializes in the biological control of harmful and pest insects without the use of deadly poisons. In his Internet research, he found an article by Prof. Armstrong at his Wayne's Word web site about the Ombu tree (http://daphne.palomar.edu/wayne/ecoph24.htm). This is an excellent example of how the Internet is used for research and valuable connections between scientists.

The 2001 Hayward Awards for Excellence in Education, honoring four outstanding California community college faculty members, have been granted. Palomar College proudly announces that Bonnie Ann Dowd, of our business department, was one of the recipients.  As a teacher, she strives to bring her own knowledge of the corporate world into the classroom.  Among her innovations, is an award-winning marketing internship program at Palomar, which has been incorporated into the Marketing/Advertising degree program, and an online small business management course.  Read the News Release [pdf], or visit the business department web site to find out more.
