Oceanography Lab Resources

This Web page contains links and other resources needed to complete exercises in the Oceanography 100 Lab.

Students will use some of these links during lab time.  Other links should be used to complete an exercise prior to an in-class lab or field trip.

Students should consult their lab manual for information about using these links.

Welcome to Oceanography 100 Lab!

The ninth edition of the Oceanography lab manual includes a thorough update and revision of exercises as well as incorporates on-line aspects of lab investigations and introductory material. Information for field exercises has also been updated to reflect new studies and projects along San Diego’s coastline.

At Palomar College, Oceanography Laboratory (OCN 100L) is offered as an optional 1-unit course that accompanies the 3-unit Oceanography Lecture (OCN 100). The lab exercises and field trips included in the lab manual are designed to help students better understand various oceanic concepts and processes.

Material presented in the lab manual is divided into two main sections: Laboratory Exercises and Field Exercises.

Laboratory exercises refer to those concepts explored in a classroom setting with the use of marine charts, sediment and water samples, and online resources. Field exercises provide students the opportunity to explore oceanographic concepts in the coastal settings of San Diego County and adjacent Orange County.

*       A Special Note to the Oceanography Lab Student

It is important for you to familiarize yourself with your lab syllabus and your lab manual. The order of lab activities will vary from semester to semester and from section to section due to scheduling of field trips for optimum tidal conditions. Your lab syllabus will provide you with information on lab activities scheduled for each week. It is the student's responsiblity to make sure that any pre-lab activities are completed prior to their class meeting. The following web links will help you access required materials for each of the assigned lab activities.
