100 Introduction to Radio and Television: Three hours lecture (3 units).A survey of American broadcasting, its development, impact and influence on our society; basic principles, mass communication theory, station operation programming, advertising, rating services, cable television, regulation, and censorship; in-depth analysis of current issues and developments. Field trips to local and network studios. CSU

100L Introduction to Radio and Television Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1).Practice in use of radio and television studio equipment. Designed for students who are not Radio-Television majors. CSU

101 Television: A Modern Art Form: Three hours lecture (3) An aesthetic study of television as a theatrical medium. Considers television as the theatre for the mass audience. Dramas will be screened and analyzed as to their creative theatrical components; dramatic, dynamic, thematic, structural, and visual. Basic techniques unique to the television medium will be examined and discussed. CSU

110 Broadcast Writing and Producing: Three hours lecture (3). Creating and developing ideas and materials for broadcast. Problems of timing, pacing, visualization, and expression. Techniques of scripting for radio and television. CSU

110L Broadcast Writing Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 110 Practice in planning and preparing scripts for radio and television. CSU

115 Creative Writing for Television and Cinema: Three hours lecture (3) Instruction and practice in the art of dramatic script writing. Emphasis is placed on the development of the initial story idea into a viable, professional shooting script for television or film. This course is dually listed as CINE 115. CSU

120 Fundamentals of Television Production: Three hours lecture (3) Three hours lab (3) The terminology, practices, and aesthetic considerations of visual and sound productions used in the television broadcast environment. Principles of staging, composition, blocking, graphics, studio techniques, writing, lighting and special effects for television. Lab includes the practice in planning and producing television programs.

124 Staging and Lighting for Television: Three hours lecture (3) Co requisite: RTV 124. A study of the aesthetic considerations and technical practices in sets and graphics design, staging, and lighting for television and film. CSU

124 Television Staging & Lighting Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 124L Practice in planning and set up of lighting for television and in set and graphics design and construction. CSU

130 Radio Production: Three hours lecture (3) Co requisite: RTV 130L Techniques and theories of audio production in the preparation of radio programs. Use of audio mixing and recording equipment, editing and dubbing, microphone techniques and program construction. Several programs produced by the student will be broadcast on radio station KKSM. CSU

130L Radio Production Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 130. Practice in planning and producing audio productions for radio, television, and film. CSU

  135 Beginning Radio Station Operations: Three, six, or nine hours laboratory (1, 2, 3). Introduction to radio station operations and audio production skills along with practical exercises using broadcast equipment and techniques. May be taken four times. CSU

136 Advanced Radio Station Operations: Three, six, or nine hours laboratory (1, 2, 3) Advanced radio and audio production skills along with practical exercises using broadcast equipment and techniques. Special emphasis in broadcast management training. May be taken four time. CSU

140 Radio News: Three hours lecture (3) Prerequisite: Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, RTV 130 and 130L. Co requisite: RTV 140L .Introduction to the principles of radio news writing, rewriting, editing, gathering (by audio recording and news wire services), and announcing. Student will incorporate learning into the production of radio newscasts for radio station KKSM. CSU

140L Radio News Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 140 Practice in planning and producing radio newscasts. CSU

150 Performance and Acting for Broadcast and Film: Three hours lecture (3) Co requisite: RTV 150L Techniques of preparation and delivery of materials before microphone and camera. CSU

 150L Broadcast Acting Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 150 Practice in radio and television program acting and announcing. CSU

160 Broadcast Advertising: Three hours lecture (3) Prerequisite: RTV 100. Co requisite: RTV 160L Role and practice of broadcast advertising including marketing and media research, time purchasing, and advertising message design and production. CSU

160L Radio-TV Advertising Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 160L Practice in planning and producing radio and television advertising campaigns. CSU

170 Non-Linear Video Editing and Computer Applications Three hours lecture (3) Co requisite: RTV 170L An introduction to the use and operation of analog and non-linear computer video editing systems. Special emphasis on the disciplines and techniques of broadcast television video editing. Provides an introduction to the use of Final Cut Pro editing software for non-linear video editing. Incorporates basic computer literacy essential to employment in the industry.

194A Experimental Topics - Radio Operations: Three, six, or nine hours laboratory (1, 2, 3) Prerequisite: RTV 130 Advanced research projects designed to meet the specific needs of student's interest in radio station operations. Projects may be chosen for production by the College or by the individual student. Grading: Credit / No Credit. May be taken four times. CSU

194B Experimental Topics - Television Operations: Three, six, or nine hours laboratory (1, 2, 3) Individual television projects, including operations of television equipment in college-produced television programs or individual productions. May be taken four times. CSU

197 Radio and Television Topics: (.5 - 4) Units awarded in topics courses are dependent upon the number of hours required of the student. Any combination of lecture, laboratory, or lecture-laboratory may be scheduled by the department. Refer to Class Schedule. Topics in Radio and Television. 220 Television Production and Direction: Three hours lecture (3) Prerequisite: A minimum grade of "C" in RTV 120 and 110. Co requisite: RTV 220L Techniques and theories of television production and direction. Practice in pre-production planning, staging, studio production, and editing. Duties and responsibilities of director and production crew. Production of fully scripted television programs for airing on cable and broadcast stations. CSU

  220L Television Directing Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 220 Practice in planning, staging, and production of television programs. CSU

225 Remote Video and Editing: Three hours lecture (3) Prerequisite: A minimum grade of "C" in RTV 120 and 110. Co requisite: RTV 225L Principles and techniques of remote video production using single camera ENG techniques. Theory and practice of off-line, 3/4 inch, control track editing. Introduction to time code computer editing systems. CSU

225L Remote Video and Editing Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 225 Practice in remote video production and videotape editing. CSU

230 Radio Programming and Production: Three hours lecture (3) Prerequisite: RTV 130 & 130L. Co requisite: RTV 230L Techniques for producing commercials, public service announcements, disc jockey shows, and newscasts for radio broadcasts. Practical experience on radio station KKSM. CSU

230L Radio Programming Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Prerequisite: RTV 130 & 130L. Co requisite: RTV 230 Practice in planning and producing radio programs and announcements. CSU

240 Television News: Three hours lecture (3) Prerequisite: RTV 120, & 110 or 140. Co requisite: RTV 240L .. Principles of scripting, gathering, and editing of television news. Production of newscasts for airing on cable television. CSU

240L Television News Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 240. Practice in planning and producing television news broadcasts. CSU

270 Computer Video Editing: Three hours lecture (3) Prerequisite: RTV 120. Co requisite: RTV 270L Principles and techniques of computer assisted videotape editing. Theory and practice of off-line and on-line SMPTE time code editing using the Grass Valley computer edit controller. Emphasis on controller initialization and set-up, SMPTE time-code management, operation of time base correctors, a-b roll editing, and edit list management and storage. Application of operational and aesthetic editing principles to specific editing projects. CSU

270L Computer Video Editing Laboratory: Three hours laboratory (1) Co requisite: RTV 270 Practice in computer assisted videotape editing. CSU

275 Avid Editing for Television and Film: Six hours lecture/laboratory (3) Prerequisite: RTV 170 and RTV 270. Principles and techniques of editing video and film projects using Avid technology. Digitizing source material, storyboarding, timeline, audio editing, importing and exporting graphics, outputting, and media management.

294A Experimental Topics - Radio Programming: Three, six, or nine hours laboratory (1, 2, 3) Prerequisite:..... RTV 230 Advanced radio projects to meet the specific needs of the student's interest in radio programming. Work on college-produced broadcast productions. Grading: Credit / No Credit. May be taken four times. CSU

294B Experimental Topics - Television Production: Three, six, or nine hours laboratory (1, 2, 3) Work on advanced television production including individual research; work on college-produced programs or productions at local broadcast stations, cable companies, and production facilities.
